it depends on the cause, tinnitus is not a desease but a symptom of an underlying cause which could be infection, a foreign object in the ear, excess wax or injury from loud noises. could also be side effect of medication. infection can be treated with anti-biotics, ear wax can be removed. best thing is to have ears checked, see if any of these are applicable. there are natural remedies which claim to help, and relaxation is recommended because stress excacerbates symptoms, hope this helps
If you get it particularly at night time it has been recommended to put a radio on in the background the radio frequencies can mask the noise.

I only had it once a for quite a short period of time but I did find this helpful. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for your help, much appreciated.
This was an item on this on This Morning a while ago. Some clinic in london offers a different sort of treatment that uses "balancing" sound waves or something. It took several treatments but there were people on who said it really worked. Can't remember more details I'm afraid but you might be able to contact the show?
I've had it a long time too with menieres and have kind of got used to it though it is especially annoying at night.

Like said above, having some music on which kinda distracts your mind and ears can help. I live in a city centre so there's so much noise round here it I'm more used to there being noise now.

I've got a nasal spray my neurologist prescribed which does help it.
* * *miracle cure* * * (temporary only!)

i dont know how it works, but it does.
squeeze the fleshy bit between your thumb & the finger next to it. in about 2 seconds the ringing stops.
enjoy your silence!
not sure if this would help you out here luna but a while ago I had what they call floaters in my eyes ie big black spots that I could see in my eyes and when you try to look at them they would just move. went to hospital to see if there was anything they could do but apparently there was nothing they could do. so looked them up on the net tose if there was a cure and had to pay 12 for this advise but it cured them apparently it is all in the mind if you can see the floaters in your eyes your brain tricks you to look at them if you choose to ignore them and dont look at them then they will dissapear and that has realy worked,it is just like looking through your car windscreen window, do you see the muck that is on your window or do you see the road ahead your brain throws out the muck on your windscreen and only sees the road ahead.
so the moral of this is try to train your brain to block out the tinnitus and do not think that is there just dont listen to it and eventually it will come naturaly but it will take a lot of practise.
sorry luna suppose that I may have suggested in my last answer that it is not a real condition but I know that it is but your brain can be conditioned to ignore it if you try hard enough just ignore it and dont listen for it gradgually focus on outside noises and hear them
