I'm off to the docs this afternoon (yay- i get to finish work early) for something minor but i am filled with dread as everytime i go there i come away feeling it was a waste of time and that i must be speaking martian because my doctor takes no notice of what i'm saying!
also, instead of dealing with something they ask me to come back at a later date (as if i can afford to be doing that).

oh and by the way i only go the doctors maximum 3 times a year so i'm not even a hypercondriact for them to fob off!

does anyone else have similar problems with docs or am i truly speaking martian to them?

It sounds like you really need to change your Doctor, some of them and luckily it is only some, think they are some sort of God!!! don't put up with it, write a letter to the practice manager, it probably wont be the first!!
MiniN, join the club. I always feel like this. When i leave the surgery i always feel, like ive had a wasted journey. My doctor slouches in his chair, barely looks up when i enter the room and hardly listens to what im saying! I hate it and only go twice a year unless i really have to.
However yesterday i had to go and see a different doctor as mine wasnt there about a stomach problem i have which is ongoing. He was fantastic. He listened to me, he explained about a test i need to have and he also printed me the info off his comp. I was happy that he wanted to get to the cause of my problem rather than masking what it is!! i came out of there very happy for the first time in a long long while! :-) I am finally getting somewhere. Unfortunately i doubt i will be so lucky as to get to see this stand in doc again :-(.
All the doctors I know have the attention span of a gnat so it's usually better to write down what you need to ask before you go to save your time and their time too.

However, if you find your doctor not up to standard as ratter says letter to the practice manager first and if no joy think about another GP within the practice or another surgery.

Do ask the doctor whether they are listening to you. Do converse with them. Sometimes you have to lay down the law with the megalomaniacal types and look them straight in the eye. Don't look at the floor.
and then change your doctor after today if you still aren't geting the service you need.
Ratter said exactly what I was going to....change your doctor! My usual GP (who I've probably seen about 4 times in total) always come across as if he is rushing you - desperate to get you straight back out the door again. He's nice, but sometimes a little too nice...it seems like he's talking down to you and being abit patronising.

The last twice I have gone he has been away, so I've seen a different doctor. This one couldn't make you feel more comfortable, and always take time to hear exactly what you've got to say. You shouldn't dread going just because of your doctor's attitude, I'd definitely change if I were you.
And if you are a smoker!! any ailment from a splinter to gangrene to wart on you toe will be purely because you smoke!! I no longer smoke so I am glad I don't have to put up with this God like Doctor looking down his nose at me like I am a bit of dirt!!!

I have a really good Dr. now, easy to talk to and actually listens, great!!!
LOL @ Ratter, that is soo true. I too am relieved as an ex smoker that not everything i have is down to that!!!!

Thanks guys, feel better now about my appointment. i promise to be very business-like with the doctor and will not leave until i get the job done! (or until i get sent to the nuthouse for, God-forbid, disagreeing with a doctor)
I feel exactly the same at my doctors...!!!

They're useless. I asked to be refered to hospital re my pregnancy...2 weeks later i hear nothing from anyone. I ring the hospital and they know nothing. I ring my docs and they so "oh, we'll send a fax now". I ring them up the following day and the letter's sitting on teh reception desk - unfaxed!! SO i took the letter to the hospital myself!!

Bloody hate the docs...
I refuse to see one of the doctors at my surgery as when I went to see him last time about my migraines and the fact I was getting aura symptoms but no headache he asked me "what'a an aura" and then asked me if I'd looked on the internet!!
Funny that there are bad doctors, the same as there are bad anything - I'm sure a lot of people have good experiences - I wish people would talk about them too!
