i wonder if anyone can tell me how long they waited until the 'MIRENA ' coil settled ok, i have been advised to wait until 6 months, now into month 2.5, have since been put onto estrogen hormone patches, iron tablets and being monitered monthly because of constance spotting and bleeding.

had a mirena coil fitted in April, bled till December then it fell out!!! Ended up having the hysterectomy I needed all along. Three years later, apart from hot flushes, never looked back
I put up with it for 2 yrs.... bled constantly, ended up with fibroids, put on 2st in weight and had acne!!! as a contraceptive? yeah it works, because I lost my sex drive too :-( I'm sure some people get on with it but I've gone back to the cap and will never have false hormones in my body ever again!!!

I don't need it for contraception, husband had vasectomy, had it for bleeding, I am 43 years old had 2 children (18 & 21) and never had any problems before or through pregnancy, births, had always been regular and mild, for last 3 years periods had been getting heavier and a lot more painful and more frequently, every fortnight almost, had tests, all ok but showed a thickening of uterus wall lining. Had the MIRENA fitted, first week was great, bleeding stopped, sex great, was on cloud nine, but this was short lived, i started to have a horrible dark brown discharge, called the doctor who assured me this was normal and was old blood, this slowed down but was then replaced with constant spotting or bleeding, had vaginitis, so was treated for that,( but had also had it a couple of times previous to the coil), My mood started to change so much so that even I noticed it but was unable to control it and felt I was becoming depressed, was extremely tired with no motivation or energy to do anything, becoming very emotional at times. Was also having night sweats and hot flushes, blood test did not show anything, but doctor said all signs are pointing towards menopause so has put me on short term estrogen patches (50g) twice a week for a month to start with, been on these for a week now and have not had any night sweats or flushes so far, fingers crossed, my emotional state has returned to a calm state of mind which is how I used to be, my energy level has increased slightly, but my sex life is on hold at the moment as I want to see if this had any affect on the bleeding, so far it has not made any difference. although still bleeding & spotting, i have noticed it is becoming less heavy but i do occassionally get cramps at various times.

I have had mine for 18 months and I don't like it much. My sex drive has disappeared unless i have had a skinful first I have put on weight still bleed, not as heavily but it keeps changing the dates when I do. I have the acne problem and I just feel like crap all the time. I haven't got pregnant but as it was posted above you never feel like doing it to get caught.

I would go and have it taken out but I am a bit too queezy I was under general anesthetic when I had it put in. (for other reasons).
Hi spurslady,
It didn't hurt having it taken out. Just a slight pinch and the offending item was gone.
Take a look at the site I posted up. 1000's of women with problems from this IUS and ended up with hysterectomy, or ablation and have gained relief from getting rid of it.
I found 2 users on there that didn't have a problem with it.
Sounds like this thing should be taken off the market.

I was sort of bullied into having mine by a surgeon. I had a miscarriage and was hemoraging badly. They took me in to do a D&C and I asked them to sterilize me at the same time, The Lady Doc doing the Pre-OP said yes and I signed my consent for it.

I was in the room before you go into theater being prepared for my anesthetic and the Doc who was preforming the procedure said No', he would not do it as I was only 26 at the time. I explained that I had, had my 3 children and lost 4 babies and there was no way I wanted to be in that position again. He said it was this Mirena or nothing gave me the spiel about how wonderful it was, even the nurses agreed, 'Oh I have no periods, It's wonderful etc.'. So I agreed.

They said it would take 6 moths for them to stop and as I said earlier 18 months and I am still waiting.
I was close to the same experience you had spurslady. I too was told it was the best thing when I requested to be sterilised at 35.
I feel there's a secret testing still going on with this coil but the Americans on the site I posted on are currently suing the makers of mirena.
There's a list of serious side effects that are published by the company but GPs and the like are not coming forth with it. Here is the link and go to mirena and product monograph (46 pages of side effects lol) That is totally different to the leaflet in with the coil and what the doctors tell you.

i have wondered if I am being used as a guinea pig on trial with this mirena coil, when i went to see the gynea i asked about having sterilization as i had had my family and we had decided years ago that our family was complete, my sisters both had hysterectomys at early 30s due to bleeding problems and my mother had hysterectomy when she had given birth to myself at 35, due to cancer of the womb, so i explained this, however, I was told that they dont tend to do hyterectomys as first call any more as it is such a major op and that i would find that this coil would be the answer for me as it has all the benefits without going through any of the downsides like operations and hormone replacements, well as i have already told you above, I have actually started hormone patches, so that puts one of their benefits in the bin!!! but i am still waiting for the plus side of this treatment also I was told by the gynea that my flushes and night sweats would ease off with the coil, however, my doctor said that the coil would not supply the correct hormone for them symptoms , hence estrogen patches! I feel like it is all trial and error to see whether it works, and as the gynea discharged me and sent me to my clinic as soon as i said ok to the coil, i feel that the doctor is the one that has been left to sort it all out.
