Following on from the 'Is Prince William Handsome' thread, there were a couple of interesting points made about famous men with regards to their relative handsomeness.

It became clear that women can find a 'quirky' looking man very attractive, but let's turn this around. Are there any famous women who aren't classically beautiful, but whom people think of very attractive.

Is there such a thing as a 'female Jack Black'?

Helen Mirren, Frances de la Tour (Rising Damp era), Bette Davis, Streisand...........admittedly, I am struggling for anyone under 50..................oh, what about Maggie Gyllenhal or Christina Ricci, neither are ugly but have a 'quirky' beauty...........
Felicity Kendall, Helen Mirren, and Meg Ryan (before she had botox) I think all three are attractive but I am not having a gay moment here.

Maggie Gyllenhal and Christina Ricci are excellent examples.

Both are very attractive women without technically being 'beautiful'.

I've always wondered how Maggie feels about having a brother who's considerably prettier than she is.
I think Kathy Burke is the female Jack Black... any men here Fancy Kathy?
I think Kirsten dunst could maybe go along in that category, although sometimes she does appear beautiful mostly i think she has a quirky type of look - as she looks very similar to Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Maybe Thora Birch too.
I remember in an episode of neighbours where they said that Nicole Kidman was handsome which i think is true, i dont think she is beautiful but she seems more handsome - if that makes sense!!
As someone up there ^ has said it is a matter of perspective. Jodie Foster wouldnt be what you would call classically beautiful, even though I think she is. On a par with Jack Black (presume you mean unattractively attractive but dont really know why) then I suppose Dawn French or Kathy Burke, some desperados would say Jade Goody (perhaps humour is the link). I find Tracy Barlow from Coronation St has a quirky little something and it isnt a kitchen knife, and Tamsin Greig (Green Wing) and Rosie Cavalerio (Jam & Jerusalem etc). On the serious and sexy side: Helen Mirren.
Helena Bonham-Carter has a mysterious beauty to her....
I'm with you on Jodie Foster Octavius.

However I disagree with missjef on NIcole Kidman. She is a pretty woman. Very standard features but in no way beautiful. She has no spark, now "wow"about her. She's just pretty. On the "quirky" attractive front I would say Rachel Weisz, Charlotte Gainsbourg...

The thing about good looking versus handsomeness/attractiveness is the "would you do him" game. If someone were to ask me whether I would "do" Brad Pitt I would say no. Why? Because, and maybe I'm thinking too deeply into this, there is nothing about him (I'm obviously going solely from what I read in the papers) that makes him attractive to me. I don't think that he would be interested in the same things etc whereas someone like Ralph Fiennes for example I feel I would have more in common with and that makes him more attractive to me. If you see what I mean.
The woman out of Alien, I know she is mega famous but really can't grasp her name - one of those tip of the tongue moments.

Anyways you guys know who I mean. She was in the first ghostbusters too lol.

I don't think sheis a class beauty but I know the men love her!
Can I type?

*I don't think she is a classic beauty*

Ahhh...Lauren Laverne. Just had to look her up. Yes, I can see where you're coming from.

I would also like to add the singer from Garbage who's name escapes me for the moment.

I was wrong then...I thought it would be a lot more difficult to name 'quirky' looking attractive women.
Presario - Sigourney Weaver.

I would've agreed about Jodie Foster being 'quirkily attractive', until I saw her in Inside Man. She's now become quite, quite beautiful.

A good example of someone growing into their looks.

Chloe Sevigny, forgot about her.
From reading all the replies it seems very clear that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder'!

I think Brad Pitt is awful! I wouldn't say ugly but I just can not find him attractive in anyway! But someone like... Ricky Gervais... I'd do him... he cracks me up! There is something attractive about someone who makes you laugh!
I was almost to the point with agreeing with you there Ruby. I imagine women many are not attracted to the pretty boy types (Brad / Depp / Orlando etc) but that cannot be said of the blokey girls. I think Kiera Knightly looks like a young teenage boy, and I think Johnny Depp is a bit phwooar, so I would have a go with them Im not THAT fussy!

Definitely for me, humour and acceptance of the fact that we are the way we are (whingeing anorexic yo-yo dieters are not for me) is very attractive.

Can I just put that point to the blokes on this thread, because the women have mentioned something that a number of my female mates have commented on...

Are you blokes more attracted to a plain girl who makes you laugh, or a beautiful girl who doesn't?

Be honest.
