I'm guessing at your question here. My toddler had a cot-bed, so it was a simple matter of taking off the sides. However, she was used to sleeping up against the side, so to stop her falling out I got a cot-side from Mothercare - enough room to climb in and out, but stopped her from rolling out (most of the time!) Used it for about 4 months, now keeping it to take on holiday etc. She falls out occasionally but it doesn't wake her up. Disadvantage - she was out of bed and coming to find me every 10 mins at first. We put a stairgate across her door for a month or two, and now she only comes out of her room if she really needs us. Recently she's started putting herself back to bed without needing us to do it.
my eldest climbed out the cot at 14 months so we got a toddler bed, not as far to fall! he never did fallout though. got a stairgate for the door and that was it. ds2 is in our bed and will share with his brother when he is ready. i wish i'd coslept with my eldest but didn't realise it was okay (more than ok actually it's good for babies, has loads of benefits) as those were the days when i listened to the bad advice given to new mums! i know better now!!
