Have you ever been anywhere you felt the need to leave straight away? I went to an apparently alternative night on Broad St in Birmingham tonight and it was so awful I left after about ten minutes. Bad idea going to Broad st as it's a hell hole. Now i'm home and f*cked. Bah.

Is there anywhere as bad a Birmingham?

Just about every club I've been in....

...and every pub that doesn't serve food.

Hmm.
Storm on Leicester Square London.....they hve to pay people to drag you in there, best club ever, Fabric in Farringdon and then the Cross.
The Palace in Blackpool. I went a few years ago for a friends 30th birthday. Oh my God! It was dark, smelt of a mixture of booze, sweat and vomit (with a few extra 'nifs' thrown in). They were people practically having sex in every dingy corner and fights breaking out periodically (mostly between underdressed/over made-up females with black eyes). Your shoes stuck to the carpet (actually stepped out of mine as I walked away from the bar). We stuck it for about an hour until one of us suggested going back to the hotel for a drink. I never seen a group of people cheer up so quickly. On the way home, we passed several mechanical cleaners (those little truck thingies) cleaning the vomit and urine of the the pavements. What a depressing evening!
I've heard people talking about Fabric - what sort of music do they play?
I have to stick up for Birmingham and say that it isn't all that bad!! If you move away from Broad St and into the areas around tha canal there are some much nicer places!

Though I am not a big fan of night clubs anyway, I prefer a late opening wine bar!
Heaven and Hell in Blackpool, Life Cafe, The Ritz and Jabez Clegg in Manchester. Basically anywhere hot, sweaty, smelly, dingy and where you're treated like a piece of free for all meat from the minute you walk through the door.

The Ape and Apple in Manchester as well, no idea how people can stand the smell of wee...urgh!!!

Hehe The Palace sounds interesting. I've been to a few clubs where sweat drips off the ceiling and walls are moist. Yuk!

For nightlife Birmingham is pretty bad. For such a big city there's hardly any choice of things to do at night. And their planning to knock a few of the clubs down to build flats! Oh and the only rock club, Edwards No. 8 burned down recently. Soon there'll be nowhere to go. It's quite depressing. I'm not a huge fan of clubs anymore but I don't like to go home early. Late opening pubs are the way forward I think but there's hardly any of them here too.
Which club was it, gloop? Snobs has always been my favourite club in Birmingham- I think if you look up the word 'dive' in the dictionary, there's a picture of it there, but i love it.
The Venue in New Cross is a dive, absolutely terrible place.... as is Tiger, Tigers in Leciester Square. There's another one there too... for some reason I want to use the word 'zebra' and I don't know why, I'm sure that's not the name... Anyway, it's tiny, the club is downstairs, the dance floor is microscopic and there's mirrors all around the dance floor.

Years and years a go I used to go to Club X in L. Square... (I think it was called different names on different nights). I liked the music in there but suspect it was also a dive in reality.

Fortunately I'm far too old for clubs these days ;0)

Yeah Robbo I've known Snobs to be like that! And Subway City. I used to go to Snobs all the time. I don't like it so much now. Went there recently and you could hardly move in there it was so packed. Birmingham Academy is probably the worst for sticky floors though.

Is that XLs you're talking about China? A rock Club? I used to love it there but that's another place that's been closed down
Subway in Edinburgh...or Scrubway as i like to call it!!! sticky floors and everything!!! eewwwww!!!! lol
Not sure Gloop. Was some years a go now... possibly tho!
gloop, I am mystified as to how you can say there is no where to go out in Birmingham. There are so many pubs, bars and clubs in Birmingham it is hard to choose which one to go to.

However I have always known Subway City as a gay club so maybe you prefer going to clubs that are a bit different???
Question Author
Nah Subway City has alternative/indie nights on which is what I'm talking about!

The sort of clubs Birmingham lacks is alternative/indie types which is where I like to go. And they're not great. I suppose it depends on where you like to go really. The only indie clubs I can think of are Snobs, Academy, Subway and Sanctuary has a night. There may be more but I can't think of them at the moment. It's not a lot really for a big city. There's plenty of pubs but hardly any of them have a late license. I guess it's because I visit my friends in London a lot and there is always something different to do. But I suppose there would be there.
I would never go to Broad St expecting an alternative night, where did you go? Saying that I'm going up there tomorrow night, with the people from work, for a Birthday/Christmas night out, not sure where we're going yet, it's all the same to me though, a bit pants. Oh Well I get to dress up :)
Question Author
It was in China Red I think. The only reason I went was because someone my friend knew was djing and we were told it was an alternative night. My friends all stayed but I left pretty quick. You had to plough through all the people in the main rooms to get to this little room too. It was horrible.

Broad St is horrible isn't it. People always seem so aggressive up there. I used to walk up there to go to XLs and people would always be shouting stuff to me and my friends because we weren't chavvy like them. I have been to some places there though and there not always too bad. It's mainly the people in the street.

Hope you enjoy your work night out!
Question Author
Oops I made an error. 'they're' not 'there'. Gah!
The gay quarter is far more interestig and try Nightingales while you are there.Don't worry you won't get your bum felt and there are girls about straight as well as the other and there aren't fights every two minutes
When XLs was open we used to get a taxi there from the main part of town, thus avoiding Broad St :)

I went to Nightingales last year, it was really nice in there and Graham Norton was in there too!

I'm far to fussy when it comes to clubs. I don't like Snobs anymore as it's too small and full of little kids. Birmingham Academy hasn't got Red Balloon anymore on a Saturday so I haven't been there for ages. I like Panic at the Sanctuary. I think I'm getting too old for clubs, though all of my friends want to go clubbing all the time, I just want to sit in a nice pub!
Question Author
Hehe that's a good idea getting a taxi. My favourite night is probably Panic. However last time I went there a glass bottle was thrown out the window from upstairs when I was standing outside and it landed on my head! I ended up in hospital but nothing too serious. It's kind of put me off going though.

I've been to Nightingales for a launch party and liked it there. I used to go to quite a few places on Hurst St. I know what you mean about Snobs too. Red Balloon used to be at Subway and I really liked it then. I do like just going to Pubs but I just hate their closing times!
