Wedding gift

I am going to my nephew's wedding in a couple of weeks ( he is about my age, 27) and I am thinking of putting a cheque in the wedding card. Im not really close to his mum (my sister) because she lives a few hundred miles from me and we have only met a handful of times. Anyway...what do you think is a reasonable amount to give? I am a student so not rolling in cash,but I dont want to seem tight!!
