I have had this phobia ever since I was a toddler. A fear of empty and full swimming pools, NOT water. My mother said she can't understand it as I never had any "bad experiences" with them! Sometimes the nightmare's involve me being in a room that for some reason is tiled with little round windows, I start to panic, then the room fills with water, so that it resembles a pool.......get it? . I can now be coaxed to go swimming in pools, but you can't get me near an empty one. HOW WEIRD IS THIS! Do any budding Pychologists or dream analysts out there have any ideas as to why this should be a re-occuring dream or phobia. BTW My earliest memory is having the nightmare of being under water in a swimming pool with a sheet of glass over the surface preventing me from surfacing. I still have these dreams at least 2 a month ......... WHY?

Between the room filling with water and the glass over the water, both sound like a feeling over being overwhelmed. First, by the water filling up (uncontrollably) around you and then reaching the point to where it you can't escape it because the glass is on top preventing you from escaping whatever is overwhelming you. So, look inside yourself and see what may make you feel overwhelmed, something that you may not even want to admit is bothering you. Sometimes, just realizing the cause of something is enough to "cure" it. Of course, that is only MY interpretation of it and I know nothing of you. You might try www.dreamdoctor.com and see what he says.
Picturing an empty pool scares me too, for one I cant swim and would panic that it would suddenly fill up. I have a phobia of large doors ie garage doors, stable doors, barn doors and the thought of having to open one freaks me out???????
I can really understand where that fear is coming from as i get edgey at the thought of empty swimming pools andnot even at the thought of them filling up...i think it is like sensei said, being overwhelmed.
How come your earlies memory was being under water with glass on top? where was that and how did that happen?
:) i had a nightmare a few days ago, again with that tiled walls, deep and blue and i just thought am i the only person with this fear? it couldn't be! then i google it and i found this website. this "overwhelmed" theory seams to be near the answer... at least for me.
I also didn't have a bad episode in or near a pool that i can remember. and some time ago i totaly freaked out when i was with a friend getting some money from an atm machine in a glazed building and as i took a look thru the glass i saw there was a pool inside, it was full of water, but still, as i wasn't expecting it and it was dark and noone inside, i just couldn't control myself despite the embarassment, i run to the other side of the street, tears poping out of my eyes, my heart beating so fast!
i think i'm also kind of afraid of the tiles and also i have problems with other places with enclosed water, like dams or so.
Nice to know i'm not alone. If you find more about this subject, please just post it in here :)
