if theres someone you really like as a friend or otherwise and its clear they dont like you would it be better to keep trying to be friendly in the hope they will see how nice you are or give it up as a bad job?

If they don't like you and you've tried your best to be friendly to them then they don't deserve to have you as a friend or other, walk away, its their loss, you can do a hell of a lot better!!
Zara's right. Plus, ask yourself, why would you want as a friend someone who clearly doesn't like you? What does that say about your self-esteem? Treat yourself better - you deserve a friend who values you.

Maybe you're seeing that person as who you'd like them to be ("someone who likes me") rather than who they really are ("someone who doesn't give a fig").

Either way, I wouldn't go out of my way to be rude or mean about it. Why waste your energy?
