My mum has Emphysema and uses a nebuliser 3 times a day. She is quite mobile for her age (82) but she says her lungs are painful and feel really heavy all the time - especially during the Winter months when it is cold. She says it really hurts to even lift her arms up. Does anyone know of anything to relieve this type of pain.

Thanks.

Emphysema sufferers may also require oxygen as well as neluisers, sometimes continuously.

You can help to ease discomfort by getting her to maintain an upright position supported with pillows in a well ventilated room. This should help her chest to expand adequately. She should also avoid smoky atmospheres. It is important that you talk to your doctor about the amount of exercise/movement that she should do (if any).

Further than that, you may need some specialist advice, like here for example: http://www.lunguk.org/

Obviously I meant nebulisers
