After watching the movie Desperate Measures (Michael Keaton) I began thinking and am now wondering if anyone thinks that serious criminals seving sentences in prison(psychopats excluded) could/should/might be offered a reduction in sentence if they donate tissue example partial liver/kidney/bone marrow etc. or am I thinking about something ablsolutely absurd.

Im thinking this would be a tad unethical or at least suspect. If someone was willing to donate body parts for a reduced sentence they would probably be doing a hefty stetch for a serious crime. I suppose the problem might arise that donating kidneys could then be equated with punishment which is ultimately why some one is banged up. If someone killed a person would they be redeeming theselves by saving a life with a kidney?
The mind boggles as to what would happen in the case of a wrongful conviction. Can you imagine trying to give the Birmingham 6 their bits back?
So we'd come full circle. Chopping your hands off for stealing a loaf of bread?

I was thinking that the donation would be voluntary ....as in if they are interested in the scheme they would be allowed to take the option.
This kind of thing would be open to major misuse. Prisoners have few rights and could very well be coerced into donating organs. It would only take a few unethical prison guards to have a situation where donating a kidney was no longer voluntary and murderers were out on the street.
There was a story about this actually happening on annonova news a couple of months ago ( of course right now I can not find the link for you ) . A prisoner saw a news story about a woman who was desperately in need of a new kidney so offered to donate, against all the odds he was a perfect match and his kidney was used. His prison govenor was so impressed by his unselfish actions that he granted him a pardon.
