The only way to get brown is to start going tanning or start using creams several weeks before your vacation, and then you will be just the right color ;) It's just like when you roast a marshmellow, if you want it brown you have to stand there a lot longer with the marshmellow high above the flame vs. burnt is fast and right down in the flame. It takes time to have a nice brown tan.

Stylinsam- Im not a huge fan of tanning, but occassionaly I will tan to get some color. But don't you think it's healthier to get color from the sun and use a lite sunblock, then covering your body in a dye that makes you look tan?

i never use sun tan cream i always use coconut oil or carrot gel...you go black!!!! its fab

Oils are Great! But most people can't use them becuase they either burn to easily, or their skin breaks out. And even if you do use the oil, start ahead of time to get that nice brown look. Most people unless your skin is already fairly dark, they need at least two weeks to get that real nice toasted color.

Back in the 70's my mother always used to swear by Bergasol. Back then it had bergamot oil in it. This sensitised the melanin and made you go a lot browner.

It also allegedly gave you skin cancer.

I don't think they use bergamot oil any more!

Be careful and safe, pale and interesting is much more atractive than red and cancerous! :c)

Many meditterrainian girls i know swear by olive ooil mixed with lemon..but i just use tropicana Factor 0 suntan oil when i am already getting a colour, but to be on the safe side always use protection.

There are two formulas for getting a dark tan. One is not tanning at a salon before you go on holiday, and arriving pale. In this instance you MUST only tan for short periods with factor 15-20 protection on the first few days, taking real care not to burn. If you do, then forget about getting a dark tan as you will not be able to expose your sore bits to the sun until they have healed and that could take ages. After you have achieved a base tan, gradually lower your protection and increase your tanning time.

My second formula is for a month before your holiday go on a stand up sunbed once or twice a week, maximum for your skin type. (mine is 6-8 minutes), getting a base tan there and then tanning on holiday, not forgetting to use protection but it doesn't have to be as high as u'd use if you'd hadn't used a bed.

Remember your natural skin colour will detemine how dark you go, if you are really pale then you wont go as dark as someone with olive skin for instance, who go can go completely brown. Remember its a tan that is achieved over a long period of time that lasts the longest and looks best.

I have quite fair skin and I usually go pinkish, then the colour disappears altogether and when im back from hols I look just as pale as I did before I went.

Although last year I used a sunbed for about a month beforehand, gradually building up the time as I used it. Then whilst on holiday, I used a high factor sun lotion (about 30) as it avoided the skin burning and peeling off the layers of skin with colour i'd just managed to get!

I noticed rather than being pink when I returned from holiday last year, I was a pale brown...which for me was rather good!!!

Oh I used Ambre Solaire as altho it was high factor, it wasnt thick and white! It soaked in straightaway.

I think if i used oil, i'd frazzle!

these tablets are great, quite expensive but worth it,

you can get them in boots..

There's this suncream i tried a couple of years ago which speeds up the tanning process - you get brown much faster. I can't remember what it's called but it was in a yellow tube in a box and was about 17. I will come back and let you know if i remember the name...
I can't believe this thread, I thought that everybody these days knows that any exposure to the Sun's radiations can cause skin cancer of various types and you are all discussing the best ways to get the most ''effect'' from sunbathing.
