I can control my dreams to a certain extent and sometimes, though not always, I am aware that I am actually dreaming though this normally only happens when the dreams aren't that good.
There is an extent to which I can control my dreams but I usually find it is just before I become conscious. Sometimes with a frightening or a strange dream, it's a good thing because I can take it into familiar territory, I find 'waking dreams' (dreams that are so vivid they feel real, I often wake in the middle of them very disorientated) very distressing, thank God they don't happen too often.
I have found I am able to control dreams when I become aware I am dreaming. This has occoured in both average and nightmare like dreams. It great in a nightmare because you can get your own back and turn it into a posative dream.

I heared that someone who had had a traumatic experiance resulting in recurring nightmares involving reliving the experiance (being attacked) was advised to 'take control of the dream' and attack her attacker. This helped her a lot in dealing with the deeper emotional scars which where left as a result fo the experiance.
That's called "lucid dreaming" -- I wish I could have dreams like that!
