My daughter is thirteen and a half, she has Down's and is quite petite for her age both in height and weight. We need to find some adequate sanitory protection for her for when she starts her periods. Everything we've seen in the shops would be too bulky for her slim and very petite figure. She's started to develop quite rapidly of late and she could start menstruating soon. We don't know where to look for the best pads etc but surely we can't be the only family with this question, does anybody out there have a solution? Thanks!

Well there must be lots of other girls who are very petite and the pads these days are very slim ...... maybe some of the teen magazines have some info ???

I know that Bodyform do pads that are especially made to wear with 'string' type knickers, thus they're very small and thin.

I think most websites of the sanitary towel makers have an area where you can order free samples so you could try getting a few of those and see if there's anything any good.

I'd be tempted to write to the Customer Relations Departments of the various manufacturers (you can find their addresses by looking on the packets in the shops) and explain your dilemma. Meanwhile, to ensure your daughter doesn't get caught out unexpectedly and get caused huge embarrassment at school, perhaps you could ensure she starts using panty liners in her knickers on a regular basis.

I know it isn't much help right now - but you may find that if she has started developing, she will have a bit of a growth spurt as well, not just in height (I know that people with Down's tend to be on the short size). So the problem hopefully would only be temporary if she puts some weight on around her hips and bum.

I would echo nicnic and Wendy S - write to the companies, explain the situation, and ask if they can send you samples of all of their products. I think they'd be glad to help. And like lady_p_gold says, girls can be so slim, and so many start their periods early these days - some while still at primary school, they must manage somehow. I'm sure they aren't all using tampons. Although talking of tampons - they would be an ideal solution eventually if you think your daughter can learn to manage them herself.

Get her some close fitting stretchy knickers with lycra in, too, to hold the pads close to her body - that'll avoid leakage and stop them moving around. (I used to wear 2 pairs of knickers when I was younger & had my period, before I moved on to tampons - I was so petrified with fear at the thought of pads leaking or rustling...!).

for a start try the bodyform site and order some samples online
always ultra are very slim and comfortable. perfect teamed with some big stretchy pants!

Speaking from personal experience, Bodyform and Always ultra with wings are the best. Kotex are also quite good x
