Why do we look to the left when we try to remember something?

I know that its to do with the left side of the brain storing facts but other than that im not sure. And also what is called when this happens?

I think it's not quite as cut and dried as some authorities make out. One person may look to the left when he's remembering something and up and to the right when he's imagining something that hasn't yet happened ('constructing' it). Another may do the opposite. The important thing (if you're interested in this kind of thing) is to note what works for a specific thing for a specific person. That way, you (or they) can make use of it. If you're interested, look into NLP (here), which attempts to make use of these internal referencing habits to overcome bad habits, phobias, etc., and to remove or overcome destructive memories.
