Do girls wear them because (a) they are fashionable (b) they look sexy or (c) they are comfortable? Do men find them particularly sexy on women?

I ask this because I am way past the age of wearing them, so perhaps it is jealousy. However, on the majority of girls I think they look very unattractive, but great if you have a figure like Rachel Stevens. I just see so many girls wearing them who have 'spare tyres' and who would look so much better if they didn't reveal middles and builders' bums.

I wear them because they are comfy and flattering to the shape of the bum! But I am a size 10 with no spare tyre and i ensure you can't ever see my underwear or builders bum!

Also, for the last few years it has been difficult to find anything but low rise as high waisted jeans/trousers have gone out of fashion. They are on their way back in again though

Oh dear Chazza - high waist trousers. My waist has disappeared over recent years!!! High waist trousers with wide waistbands were very fashionable in the seventies. I could wear them then.
I agree I don't like them, even on women with a nice figure.
On the right girl, definitely flattering and sexy. On the wrong girl, comedy gold.

Just thought, Hi waist trousers make bums look absolutely huge, even fairly small bums. Best jeans I think are those which just come under the waistline. They seem to flatter most shapes and sizes.
I have to stop my self from smiling when I see someone wearing low risers who has obviously looked at themselves in the mirror whilst standing rigid and breathing in.

That's the only explanation I can find for all the flabby tummies, spare tyres and rolls of flesh that these women display in all weathers.

Mind you - I've destroyed all the evidence of what I wore in my youth. :)

I must admit Ethel that I was an extreme exhibitionist in my youth as far as clothing was concerned. However, I was very tall and slim when I wore micro suede hotpants and those blouses that knotted just under the bust. (I wore them to work!!!). Girls generally seem to have got a lot plumper in the last thirty years. Even the clothes sizes are bigger, eg. size 12 used to be a 24" waist, now I believe it is 28".

I have diversified, sorry.

I wear them because they are the only thing I can find. (Not the REALLY low ones!) In most shops, high waist jeans are always accompanied by baggy thighs and tapered legs - very mumsy and not the look I like. I'm more concerned with what my legs look like in jeans! (although I admit that I do have a bit of a muffin top even though I'm only a size 10 - try to keep it hidden away though!)

When I started my current job I had a real job trying to find jeans which looked nice but had a higher waist. The dress code is casual so I wanted to wear jeans, but didn't want to show any bumcrack to my bosses...! Eventually I found a pair that don't show too much flesh when I sit down or bend down, but they are still a couple of inches below my belly button, so not really that high.

morg-monster. I agree those waisted jeans with tapered legs look mumsy and are very unflattering. , and why are the legs so baggy! They are made for people with small waists and large bums and thighs.

I used to be able to get exactly what I wanted from M&S, waistband just below the waist, nice longlegs and snug round the hips and thighs - but, as always when I find something good - they have been discontinued.

simply - girls wear low rise trousers because you cannot buy a "modern" cut jean that is reasonably priced that ISN'T. I'm a size 10 - but short and on the curvy side and I CANNOT find a pair of decent jeans that are not low-rise. Walk into any "trendy" shop and the majority of jeans on offer will all be low-rise. I've had this conversation/rant with many women and its the same everywhere. So be a little more sympathetic to girls you see walking around with "spare tyres" - believe me they would rather not be showing off their "assets" if clothes makers would keep "natural" women's bodies in mind - not the Rachel Stevens of the world!

Fair point metagirl, and I realise the problems. I also realise that all tops seem to be made very short these days as well. Nobody should be ashamed of their body, but I do find that it's often the biggest ladies that wear these current fashions to extremes.
I like to tuck my bazooms into my trousers, so soon perhaps I'll be wearing low-cut ones eeek!!!

metagirl - I bought some jeans in New Look a few weeks ago - they had a selection of styles there, from low, low risers, to just low risers and the ones I got were just below the waist, in all different sizes and leg lengths, and they were only 15, which I thought was excellent value!

I think the low risers can look attractive on the right figure but, as has been mentioned previously, some girls just don't suit them!!

AB trip to NY perhaps!
I wear them because I dont like things high up round my waist. But I also wear a belt, tends to stop the builders bum as I hate seeing girls with these ridiculous diamond thongs. Just makes girls look trashy.
I'm afraid my waist has gone like the rest of me...South !!
Their backs look so cold, hanging out like that in the winter, and anyhow, they can't tuck their thermal vests in anywhere ... by the way gessoo I was like you in the 70s - micro minis, platforms etc etc, how the years go by .. hey ho

Fashion trends come and go, and a look back on each departed trend raises the corner of the mouth into either amusement or a sneer... It appears most of the entries in this thread are from the female of the species, but, here in the U.S., I hear a term applied to the female wearing the low riese or ultra-low rise fashion when they obviously don't have quite the waist line or hip line for them... the term, somewaht applicable is "Muffin Top". Usually, the term is spoken by a gaggle of young girls when observing other gaggles...
