This US dental practice reckons that it's not unusual to still be having some sensitivity four weeks after the treatment: "After scaling and root planing is completed, you may experience slight discomfort around the teeth for several days and increased sensitivity to hot and cold (and sometimes sweets) for up to four to six weeks duration. I've never experienced such deep scaling as this (I was numbed up!). I have gaps in my teeth now where I hadn't before so I can use those interdental brushes in between to clean (my teeth were too close together). This was by the hygienist. I have to warm up water slightly to be able to drink it. Just wondered if it's normal.

Hi RedHelen72. I've not been back to the dentist. I'm to go back in May as she said I had the beginnings of gum disease. Hygienist told me to now rinse my mouth with water after eating anything sweet and to use a straw to drink coke and orange, etc, in future.
I had similar but I can't remember how long it lasted. It did go away eventually. Just keep going with the Sensodyne.
If there are now gaps between your teeth and there weren't any before, it's not because your teeth have been filed away, it's because the natural gaps had become filled up with calculus or tartar or whatever it is. It's good that they have now been cleaned. I think the best thing is to try what elliemay1 recommended.
Best wishes. And try hard to use the brushes every night.
I understand the cold bit being more sensitive but surely sugary things only hurt if you've got a hole and it can get into a part of the tooth that's nearer to a nerve. Are you sure the deep scaling hasn't created an area that needs a filling (crack, small hole etc).
It may have left your gums a little tender having such a heavy descale. If i have any lasting problems like that i rinse mouth with warm salt water 2/3 times a day. But also as above sensodyne tooth paste, not just brushing with, hold some in your mouth for a time.
If it doesn't soon improve I would phone the dentist and see what she says
Swill your mouth morning and night with a good mouthwash. Also, as been mentioned, a toothpast for sensitive teeth. Dentist told me to just rub a little on the gum. It's important to keep practicing good oral hygiene, to ward off infections.

However the Colgate website states . . .
"If your teeth are sensitive three or four weeks after treatment or you have other concerns, contact your dentist for a follow-up visit."

I'd suggest following Elliemay1's advice about using Sensodyne Repair & Protect over the next few weeks and then, if the problem still persists, go back to your dentist.
