I have always been active/exercised and had normal BMI. However I have been having sensations of dyspnea. It started when I developed mild covid back in June - on the second day after lying down at night I felt a sensation that I wasn’t taking enough air in (a smiler sensation to the one you get if you hold your breath for a long time and have the urge to breath) except nothing about my breathing had changed and I wasn’t holding my breath, this lasted a full 24 hours before going away.

I have experienced this sensation on and off ever since including the day before I developed a cold virus again it lasted 24 hours. I had been going for 1.5 mile runs around this time with no issues.

I have developed anxiety since (had a few stressors including a fainting episode following a ankle injury) and have been hyper aware of my breathing- when the sensation that I am not taking in enough air comes on I feel a sense of dread/very anxious and find it hard to not focus on my breathing. Through the day I feel like taking a deep breath all the time but sometimes I can’t catch a good breath. I have a pulse oximeter at home and it always reads above 95%.

The sensation came on again earlier and I thought id experiment- I went on my static bike for 7 mins and set to moderate resistance. My HR increased to 142bpm and sats were maintained above 96%. I then recovered after 10 mins.

I felt ok when exercising yet as soon as I recovered to a resting state I am now back to feeling that sensation in the background that I can’t take enough air in and need to take a deep breath. It is a bit like the sensation you get if you hold your breath and feel the urge to breath, except I am not holding my breath I am breathing normally.

I have been to my gp my oxygen sats and bp was ok. Also had a ecg which showed no abnormality. I had a blood test which suggested very slight anaemia but o treatment was advised, though I have been taking iron tablets anyway. The gp also said lungs sounded fine on auscultation.

I do have anxiety. Does the fact that I can exercise ok mean that the sensation is just due to anxiety?

Yes.....the history that you give and the investigations that you have had confirm my opinion.

I don't rate your anaemia as contributing anything to your symptoms.
