I have never been able to connect with African music, even though I have listened to a fair amount, and watched it live on various occasions.

Like the appeal of Coldplay and Jethro Tull, I am unable to locate any interest - but I am delighted on a daily basis with the vast amount of music available to me to check out.
I enjoyed that, Chris. As you say 'relaxing' ( not a clue what he is singing about though ).

My knowledge of Akan isn't that great either, Tony ;-)

Andy: I think that purists might argue that Ghana's 'highlife' genre (which that song falls into), which merges Akan traditional music with Western instrumentation isn't really 'African' anyway ;-)
Nice x

Thanks, Patsy!

Easy listening, ta Chris.

I thought that you might like it, Mamya ;-)
you might like this, Buenchico. No idea what it's about but it's kinda dreamy

Thanks, Jno. Mali produces so many totally different styles of music but anything by Salif Keita is always well worth a listen.

I've posted this before but what the heck anyway? This is Oumou Sangaré showing just how well Mali embraces jazz funk. (So much for the 'relaxing' theme to this thread though; this is pure musical energy!)
Also not very relaxing … but great to dance to :-)

To use my favourite word, Chris.....Bliss..... :-)
I like that, Toorak. Africa goes disco.

I know that track well, Toorak. It's undoubtedly Mory Kanté's best-known hit, which reached the charts (and, indeed, topped them) in many European countries when it was released back in the 1980s but seems to have remained unknown to a lot of people in the UK until it started appearing on several 'best of world music' compilations. It's definitely one of my favourites!
I still have the original album Chris - I remember dancing to it in the early 90s :-)
Question Author
I've got several of Mory Kanté's albums but I don't think they include 'Akwaba Beach', Toorak.
This is a lovely song (even if you can’t understand any/all of it).

Question Author
Thanks, Toorak. That version's in Turkish but the original was in Greek. It's a love song: "Before daybreak I went out and to our first meeting place in the dawn I returned . . . "
Didn't understand many words... but enjoyed it anyway:-)
Yes, it’s from their rebetek album so there is a lot of turkish/Greek crossover

I really liked yeni Turku and was very disappointed when they broke up
