Shorten Football Team Names On TV

I don't watch football much, but when I channel hop and find football is on I find it annoying that I don't know who is playing who due to their names being shorten or abrevitated at the corner of the screen. Why have the BBC and ITV done that? What's wrong having their full names displayed on the screen?

To save space!  If it says "Arse", it's short for Arsenal.

Oh if only. They always shorten Arsenal to ASNL - an opportunity wasted.
