When I was a child, many of the women I knew were on 'Black and Greens' for their 'nerves'. A lot of ladies seemed to have 'bad nerves'.

What were they taking?

Librium was a popular drug in the 50's 60s for anxiety and tension ( mainly women ;-)) Probably the most popular prescription written. It is an anxiolytic agent..........used for anxiety. However....anxiety may play a part in bipolar ( not my field) and if so Valium is preferred to Librium. Also for "nervous stomachs" it was combined with an antacid and the...

I'd guess Valium (diazepam). They did come in black and green capsules as well as other forms. Got that from Google, I don'tknow.
Probably meprobamate

in a proprietary form, Meprotabs, which are black and green tablets.

They were obviously some form of anti-anxiety drug. Everyone seemed to be on them. Stressful times, the fifties and sixties!
As a child back in the 1960s I often remember being told so and so has had a 'nervous breakdown' which I now assume is a name for a 'mental health issue' .
I thought this was about one of my favourite brands of chocolate bar
I think PMT was considered 'mental health issues' back then.
Mothers little helper??
The change certainly was ummmm...poor women.

My Mum had black and green capsules when my Dad left home Tilly. No idea at the time what they were for, apart from they made her feel better

Maybe you got it wrong Tilly - maybe it was their fix of Green and Black chocs. LOL

Librium.
I would guess it was Valium. I've never heard of the term Black and Greens, but lots of women were put on Valium "for their nerves" in those days.
^^^^^ I have told you, it is not valium........they were called LIBRIUM.
Mohne is correct, re-googling last night I found it was Librium but didn't bother posting. Librium and Valium were like brother and sister though weren't they?
