There are some special 'shavers' on the market which you can use to shave them off.    Never tried one myself but I am sure someone on AB has.
Wash your jumpers inside out and don't put them in the machine with other stuff.Just wash any jumpers together.

There are loads here:

you just need to find a UK source (if that's where you are).

OMG... I've just had a flashback to the 70s, with the annual run-up-to-christmas TV adverts by Victor "I liked it so much I bought the company" Kiam for the Remington Fuzzaway along with the adverts for the Ronco Buttoneer and K-tel's assorted offerings.

All absolutely useless !!
Hiya admarlow...I have this little thing - only small - which is like a semi circle and the straight end is like a wire with holes - you rub it up and down the rebel garment and it de bobbles it.  I couldn't be without it.  I got mine from either betterware or kleeneze but have since seen them in woolworths and wilkinson.  I've seen them ranging from 99p to 2.99.  Happy de-bobbling!
just bought one from woolworths! 3.99 for a electric shaver thing, really works!!!
