I'm not a smoker but I'm amazed at the continued measures that keep coming against smoking. It's not illegal to smoke if over 18 yet more and more regulations keep coming along. There is one legal drug that does lots more harm than smoking ever did. Diabetes, heart and liver problems. Domestic violence; absenteeism; over 2000 road deaths annually; town centre violence etc. Alcohol continues to cause many more problems but people think it's ok.

It's not illegal to smoke, but I think it is widely accepted that were the practice/drug had been introduced for the first time now it would be an illegal drug. It is antisocial in that it affects those around the smoker so a large portion of the present population has had enough. So it should be no surprise at all that governments want folk to behave better towards their fellow citizens and not continue to risk their health too.

As for alcohol, if it was introduced now it would probably also be illegal, but at least it is excess imbibing that causes issues, both short term for those around them, and longer term for themselves. And in small quantities it is an aid to sociability. Even so it is also subject to laws, which is fair enough.

As for the other problems mentioned I'm unsure why they are. Do you think all these things are in competition with each other ? That if you smoke you can't cause a road death, or if you drink you can't commit domestic violence ? You seem to be muddying any points you are trying to make so one can not see what you are getting at.

So do you want to debate Smoking or Drinking, I'm not sure?

I've just come back off holiday and seemed that everyone smoked.
Defecating on your head probably won't cause you any illness either but I'll bet you won't fail to get offended if it happened to you simply because of that.

I don't know of anyone having the next day off because they had one drink too many either. It's about excess again not normal use.

The thing is you merely listed a load of unrelated things on the end of trying to say smoking is ok and should be left alone because drinking is allowed. And I'm unsure what you were trying to say with the list. In any case the recent laws seem fair enough to me.

Bear in mind that I was a smoker for a long time until I gave it up in 1992. I am now an absolute anti-smoker & think that for the benefit of everyone's health every effort should be made to ban smoking everywhere. There always was a saying that ''where there is smoke there is fire'', so all of you smokers beware you do not burst into flames or we may soon have legislation against you. The other problem is of course that we non smokers can detect it on your clothes when we stand near you in shops etc.
I knew a non smoker once - he spontaneously combusted alas, it could have been apoplexy ;-)
Big difference between drinking and smoking. Most people who drink don't drink every day; most smokers smoke from the minute they get up until bedtime and have to smoke during the working day and whilst out and about. Every single cigarette is damaging to the health but a single drink can be beneficial. A parent drinking in moderation in the house is not harming the kids but a smoker is. Most people who drink don't if they can't afford to ; for most smokers it is a priority
Nice one Mamy lol.

For Smokers To clean out your lungs, I have always used Redex products. You can buy their Injector Cleaner from Halfords and most accessory shops. I would buy 2 bottles. Put one through as per their recommendation, and use the second one over four days Just be aware that it sometimes generates white smoke, not to be confused with steam, which could lead people to believe you have a head fault.

It might cut down your exhaust emissions.
I used to live in a pub...I've never seen a smoker attack someone because they had too may cigarettes.

It's not a nice habit, that's a fact, but it doesn't cause fights and make people shove a glass into someone elses face.
Smokers have had it all their way for far too long. They abused the privilege and polluted everyone else's air without the slightest regard. All public smoking should be banned.

There is plenty of evidence for passive smoking causing harm. Besides, a person should not be forced to inhale disgusting, fifthly, cigarette smoke whether it has been proven to cause harm or not.

Would you like it if every time you passed a drinker they insisted you took a sip of their drink?
Also remember that the second hand smoke you are breathing has been in their filthy lungs aaaagh.

It won't be long - you'll get it.
You only call it ridiculous because you know it blows your "offence" argument wide apart and you have no answer. Insulting during a debate is a poor substitute for supporting one's viewpoint.
I absolutely agree with you 10Clarion. Alcohol causes way more problems but here yet again for the umpteenth time are ABERs telling us (me not you) we are filthy and disgusting and stink and don't give a $hit about anyone else. Say something similar to others non-smoking related and it would get removed. Come on here and say you're an alcoholic and you'll get all the cyber love and sympathy in the world. We have repeated threads about what are you drinking and wines to buy all full of bonhomie. As you say it's still completely legal.
