Just thought I'd give a quick mention here, for all you nature lovers.
My faithful friend the robin was seen busily collecting nesting material in the garden this morning.

Is this likely to be a male bird, or do both sex's take part in nest building ?

Have a read of this Chipchopper, tells you all you need to know.... http://www.rspb.org.uk/discoverandenjoynature/discoverandlearn/birdguide/name/r/robin/nesting.aspx I don't know whether that link mentions it or not, but during the breeding season is the only time you can tell the sexes apart. Because it is only the female who sits on the nest,...

Good on ya little robin x. Not sure about the nest building Chip, hopefully an expert will come along and let you know ......
Female only Chip.
Robins are very quick nest builders I left a shed door open for a morning, within which time a robin had built a complete nest out of damp moss.

You should be able to tell the female by the red at what would be our hairline on our forehead. On the female the red comes to a point like a V, and on the male it is more rounded. Of course you need them to keep still so you can have a look!
Made, and placed nesting box in ivy at the bottom of my gardenin, the hope a robin will nest this year.
Have had Blue Tits nest in a box I made past years.

Thank you, all for your answers.
Its interesting to learn that the females do the nest building.
I was thinking that, they may be similar to wrens, where the male builds several nests and the female will choose one of them, then lines it herself.
