Potential Ingrown Toenail

I am going to see a podiatrist tomorrow, as I have a toenail which is beginning to curl inwards and it is beginning to hurt. I cannot get under it to cut it myself. It's not red or inflamed, just a blooming nuisance.
Any experience/ideas as to what the podiatrist will do. Will it hurt? I am not looking forward to it but I don't want it to become any worse.

I figured it was best to get it all out of the way in one go, then it all heals together. Looking back it would have been far more of a faff and time-

my sister goes to a podiatrist altho has the most fabulous feet you could have - so have I at the moment - a little tiny piece of hard skin needs to be removed from mine.
My neighbour got both two big toenails completely cut out and they numbed them so you will be ok. If they are sore ask for a wee local injection.

It really depends on how the toe nail has grown in, some can just be sorted with some appropriate trimming, some need more extensive work requiring a trip to the hospital. Cutting a v in a nail does absolutely nothing to prevent it. I have done foot care courses and nail cutting courses, I am not qualified to cut ingrowing toenails though, I just refer them. A little side line of mine, soon to be expanded. :-)
I had problems with both sides of both big toes, were involuted and ingrowing and kept getting infected. I had both sides of both big toe nails removed all at the same time and phenol put on to stop them growing back.
Not very pretty, especially when healing but the procedure itself was fine, the injections were the worst bit, your toe is numb afterwards, if you are squeamish then you may not want to watch though I did, I was given the opportunity to lie down so I couldn't see. I had the option of the side being removed or the whole toenails being removed and went for the former.
Had no problems with those nails since, have had with other nails but probably my RA causing havoc in my feet.

Ny husband has ingeowing toes nails. The first one kept getting infected until it was completly removed. Took a while to heal but no further problems after that..the second one now gets regular treatment with the podiatrist as they are hoping to save the this nail...its a loosing battle at the mo but time will tell.
He says it didn't hurt too much as he had an injection into the toe beforehand..

Not too bad today, at all. I have one very involuted toenail which was trimmed and padded with a thin twist of cotton wool. The podiatrist said that I had done very well in cutting them myself but I needed to invest in some spring loaded clippers, as I tend to split the nail when using scissors.
She was excellent and showed me what to do to keep the problem at bay.
She did talk to me about the possibility of having the sides removed, if need be, at a later date.
She actually said that my feet were perfect, apart from this blinking toenail. 'One of the nicest pair of feet I have ever worked on.' I was dead chuffed.

Glad to hear that Tilly, keep a close eye on them though, can easily get infected.

It wasn't very pleasant to watch but the podiatrist was training two people and talking them all through it and letting them do bits of it so was quite a long session and lots of explanation, especially with four sides to do! At least it was all numb, didn't expect the injections to sting so much though.
