My little boy cat has asthma and is currently on 2.5mg of Prednisolone per day. Getting him to take the tablet is 'challenging'.

Tonight he has had a couple of short coughing episodes - he is otherwise happy and not at all 'ill'. He is also refusing to take his tablet - he is being stubborn.

Is this coughing in any way a cause for me to get concerned about him? I have some problems coping with his illness (mainly due to Manic Depression and anxiety) so I tend to go into a major panic when this happens.

Taking him to the vet is a nightmare - he purrs loudly as soon as he realises where we are going and the vet can't hear his lungs.

The only good thing is that it is Frankie that I have to deal with and not his stroppy, stupid and vicious sister, Princess Merlin, - the thought of medicating her terrifies me. :-)

PS I put it in this section instead of A&N as I thought that I would get a more scientific answer here.

Sorry, wolf63 - I can't offer any advice on the coughing - but do sympathise with you regarding getting Frankie to take his tablets - I've been there and it's impossible at times .. mere humans are no match for a determined cat.

Perhaps give the vet a ring and see what they say about the coughing ??

I spoke to the vet - but we never seem to see the same vet. I really think that the odd coughing fit will be okay. But once he starts coughing it breaks my heart.

I currently want to wring his neck so I suppose we are about even.

The pill in in a cat treat and I think that we will go to bed and see if greed is his downfall.

Dogs are much simpler animals. Cats are devils in furry coats.

throw the pill right down to the back of the throat - close his mouth- there will be scrabbles - the tablet should melt down.

Otherwise break the tablets - smash it if you like and hide in dinner.

JJ - sticking it in his food is not an option. The pair of them have their own plates but tend to steal each others food.

He would let me force the tablet down once - and then would not come near me again. I had this problem with his inhaler.

He takes his medication - in his own time and seems to be suspicious about me enticing him to eat his special treat.

He is a sweet cat but he is also a pain in the neck.
