I didn't think that Islam forbade the imbibing of alcohol.

There are different levels of religiousness. I have been out with plenty of Muslim colleagues who love to knock back a few beers. It depends how devout they are - same as any religion.

Well I stand well chastised. I thought it was completely forbidden, hence westerners getting into trouble in Saudi and so on.
It`s forbidden in Saudi but it still goes on in certain places.
In Saudi absence is custom not to drink, not religious.
It's against my religion to covet neighbours' wives but I confess to having done so once or twice.
The Koran doesn’t specifically prohibit the consumption of alcohol, but since it befuddles the mind, it strongly advises against it. Most Muslims don’t drink alcohol. The devout never drink it.

Saudi Arabia is governed by Sharia Law which is based upon Islamic religious texts. The consumption of alcohol there may carry the death sentence.
"May" being the operative word. It depends who you are and who you work for.
