Sainsbury's have removed all single use carrier bags and replaced them with reusable ones at 5p each. Since they're reusable, they're not subject to the same rules as single use bags but they're still voluntarily donating 1p per bag to local charities. (Based upon the charities that Sainsbury's already support, they're likely to be very small organisations serving very small areas. Sainsbury's display notices telling customers which charities they are).
My Sainsbury's this morning were still dishing them out for free, although this is in England. Incidentally, I just got to wonder: these 'reusable' bags carry a legend that when worn out you can return it to the shop and have a replacement for free. Has anyone ever done that?
yes, I have done it in waitrose and seen other people do it in Tesco
Yes, I have too.
Aren't reusable bags different to 'bags for life'?
Really? I wouldn't have the brass neck to show myself up in a shop for the sake of 10p.
Why not? That's the deal. I don't do it often as when i buy the bags for life they tend to get used for other things like gardening or dropping stuff off at charity stores, but I have no preblem with it.
Scotmid Co-op are adding the money to what they already provide by way of community grants:
