And while we're here, can a person take anything instead of Ranitidine if it upsets their stomach badly? Doctor says no, live with it.

That's a bit rough Maydup, I couldn't live with it. I've just stopped taking Opmeprazole and am trying to deflect the withrawal with ranitidine (success is a bit hit and miss), if you regularly get acid reflux ask you doc for it, it's fanbloodytastic.
