Never had a root canal that worked. Ended up with one crowned and still feels sensitive on and off. Another one ended up with having it out. Sometimes there is a fine crack in the tooth and they can't do anything for it. Having said that you may be lucky and it may settle in a week or so.
I have heard that sometimes if a tiny bit of root is left behind it can still cause pain.

I've had two root canals done now and both took quite a while to settle down after, but not years, more like weeks.

Try some painkillers in the meantime, but push the pain issue when you go back to your dentist.
About three months ago, I had work on an upper tooth and a temporary "calming" filling was used (tasting strongly of clove oil) to let the nerve settle. For about two weeks it was very uncomfortable but during the third week improved a lot. The permanent filling was used at the end of the third week...and I've had no problems since. So, fingers crossed!
It's not unusual to have post-operative pain following a root canal treatment. I would take some anti-inflammatory painkillers if needed and wait until your next visit.
I had similiar problem but I found this great doctor http://rockendo.com and after one visit my toothache stopped. So you should consider this as the best option for you
