The problem with your views baz is that it overlooks all those cases of African immigrants drowning of the coast of Italy recently, and in years gone by too. I highly doubt they'd be taking such a risky journey if their lives weren't miserable and they weren't escaping persecution. Dismissing it as a "trick or a scam" is offensive and disgusting. No-one uproots themselves from family, friends and home without a very good reason to leave, and for such a long and dnagerous journey they'd be wanting to leave where they are rather than come here per se. Shame on you for dismissing it so lightly.

The population of India alone is about 1.2 billion and our country is just not big enough to take even a fraction of them.
Yes, we are "lucky" enough to live in a "rich" country, but we already have a population of about 60 million, and are massively in debt. Millions are unemployed over here, and much of our infrastructure is collapsing.
So do we keep taking anyone who turns up on our doorstep?
Because if we do we will never get out of debt and this country will sink under the weight of millions of extra people and crippling debt.
We have already let in far too many people and we must get MUCH tougher in the future about who we let in.
If we don't then our children, and their children, and their children, are in for a life of misery in this country.
Plenty of people's lives are miserable in Africa, India, and lots of other countries.

Very easy to say that, but please tell us, how do they prove that they are in fact in danger etc in their own countries, or do we just have to take their word for it?

baza, a number of years ago, a number of disheveled individuals spilled out of a truck on to the hard shoulder of the M1 near Nottingham. following a tip off, they were apprehended by the police and demonstrated to be illegals. having been arrested by the police, the were released into the care of the UKBA, who promptly released them.

Whilst the individual nations of Europe may be many of those things the European Union cannot claim to be so because it does not have a unified "corporate identity" to which all its citizens subscribe. However, leaving that aside, this policy shows nothing of the sort.
All it Ishows is that those responsible for this pronouncement are purposefully naïve and profligate with their taxpayers’ money and facilities. All that Africans have to do now to successfully claim asylum is to say they are homosexual and - hey presto - the world is their oyster (well, at least the bit that calls itself the EU is).
No checks will be made. Rather like Mr Kebede from Somalia. Regular readers may remember him. He was the gentleman who it was revealed last week had won a court case forcing Newcastle City Council to pay for his “educational needs” in the form of £10k worth of flying lessons. He had, apparently, been abandoned by his father after Mr Kebede Snr’s asylum claim was rejected in 2004. As far as he knew, he said, his father was either in prison or had been killed because of his political beliefs. In fact he works as an air traffic controller at Addis Ababa airport and lives with his wife (Mr Kebede Jnr’s mother) in a £90k house - which he built himself following his ejection from the UK - in one of the more affluent areas of that city. Mr Kebede Jnr is said to be in regular contact with his father (which perhaps explains his aspirations to follow a career in aviation). Further, following his “abandonment” Mr Kebede Jnr claimed to be 15 meaning he was a “looked after child” and placing the onus of his care on to the taxpayer. It fact it transpired he was 20.
