very sore on the roof of his mouth. just on the one side. Plus he said his nose was tender just on that one side. The dentist has given him antibiotics, which he finished up today, But now he has a very yellow discharge coming out of his nose on that side. Should he go back to dentist or is this normal.?

It sounds like an abscess which has burst. Good.
Is this anything like a raging toothache? And did the dentist take all his antibiotics?

Ok sorry about spelling but I am tired.!!
Sounds like a root abscess to me, and as Mojo suggested - it has probably erupted. When I had my worst one, the antibiotics started to work (relieve the pain) after about 12 hours. I've had a couple of milder (but still very painful) ones since and the only effective painkiller was dihydrocodeine.
A trip to the dentist seems sensible.

thankyou mojo and Answerprancer. that is good to know. He was in a lot of pain last thursday when he saw the dentist. Started his five day course amoxicillin then and took last one yesterday. His pain started to ease off on saturday. But up until then he was taking paracetamols and ibuprofen for the pain. Did you have the discharge coming out of your nose with any of yours Answerprancer.?
I`m not an expert but it could be that the roots of a tooth are having an effect (maybe protruding into) a sinus cavity. Discharge from the nose might be a symtom of that. Maybe he needs to see an ENT person.
I did have a slight nose discharge and I think that meant that it had gone into my sinuses. It was horrible as there was a lingering smell.
No he shouldn't go back to the dentist and no it isn't normal.

He should see his GP.

This sounds as though he has a fistula (abnormal connection) between his tooth, sinus and nose, caused by an abscess bursting in the wrong direction.
He may need to see an ENT specialist.
I concur with squad - GP asap for a once over and probably a referral to ENT. The severe pain is likely to be caused by a fistula.......push to get it sorted quickly - ENT departments are notoriously busy x

sqad, icg. Thankyou both. I will tell him. Today the yellow has stopped but he says his nose feels strange. Still has a runny nose , that side only. I will see if there is an appointment at the doctors for tomorrow for him. Thankyou again.
