I'm 21 years old and I have suffered with cold's for a number of years. Really getting fed up now, This is the 4th time I have been ill in approximately 7 weeks. I don't think it's normal yesterday didn't leave the house and today I have woke up not being able to swallow, bad headache, sick feeling, sore ears and snotty nose. I take vitamin c and Echinacea - still to no avail.

The more you catch now the less you catch later.

I rarely got colds for many years when I worked in a big well ventilated building. Then I got a job in an airconditioned building and get everything that comes around.

Didn't you have a good night last night then, Matt? (Arsenal fan, I take it.) Whilst I agree that she should seek medical advice I don't see any problem in asking for other people's experiences on here.
Maybe you are not on a well-balanced diet.
Cut it out Gooner - this is a Question and Answer site. No need to be such an ar5e.

However, I agree that it might be time to see your GP. 4 colds in 7 weeks is worth talking over with him/her.

In the meantime, keep up the vitamin C, make sure you take it all the time and not just when you feel bad. I thnk your levels are probably quite low, but your doctor can check that for you and recommend appropriate quantities.
Matt doesn't know, obviously, that some people on here ARE doctors and nurses.....

Do you eat well, rach, do you dress properly? Many of us have had a runny nose etc for weeks this year, so you might just be suffering a long-term cold. I'd see your GP, they might prescribe decongestants or a nasal spray. If you have head pain, it could be infected sinuses, that can be very painful. If you don't want to see the GP, go and see the pharmacist at your local chemist, they will suggest over the counter remedies for you. Echinacea works from some, but to keep colds at bay, not to stop them once you've got the virus.
Haha, actually it wasn't so much of a shock because it's happening so regularly now. Nothing surprises me really now, but that's for a different thread...

Yes, I agree that there is nothing wrong with asking for other people's experiences and advice. That does seem to have been the idea.

But going off on a tangent, there seems to be far too many questions on here that could be easily answered with a simple Google search, which would actually be quicker than logging in and posting a question on here.

Perhaps it's more about the social interaction and sense of community that AB provides. Something that is lost on a social pariah like myself. (Yes, I can see the irony here)

Matt, this has been discussed before, and yes you are right. Many things can be googled, but someone said last night that asking on AB can be quicker and more interesting than just pulling up a shedload of google links. You can't beat personal experience.
I hope you don't mind me asking Matt but why did you join AB ?
Mazie - I think it was actually to ask a question that I couldn't find the answer to anywhere else. It ended up not being answered I think...

Let's start again, perhaps my overly sarcastic response was a little too much, for that I apologise.

I saw a question recently that was along the lines of:

"Who sang 'In The Summertime'?"

That's the kind of thing I was referring to, boxtops, but I totally get what you're saying about personal experience though and the interesting discussions that are often thrown up by a simple question.

I hold my hands up and apologise. I didn't mean to come across as an ar5e. Perhaps I'm too bitter and cynical to frequent AB on a regular basis.
Matt, that's fine - yes, I think your first reply was a bit of a kneejerk!

I know the questions you mean - and yes, sometimes they are easily googled (sometimes I have to, to answer!) - but some people are just not good Googlers. (Others might like us to do the work for them :-(
Thank you Matt. I think you're lovely x
I agree with boxtops......this sounds as though it is chronic sinusitis and you would benefit from an ENT consultant's opinion.
Sorry Rach, I agree with Sqad get to the doctors and I hope you feel better soon x
sqaddie :-)
Let me try again....

There is a good article on the NHS website about preventing colds and flu, including some information about the effectiveness of Echinacea. Here is the link:

http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/coldsandflu/Pages/Preventionandcure.aspx

Sorry, I do not know how to make it clickable, but will endeavour to find out for the next time I post a link.

The best advice I can give you, especially if you are concerned, is to visit your GP or health professional.

Good luck.
That link works fine, matt :-)
Oh, that was a touch. It automatically became clickable...
I am not a medical proffesional so this is just advice.
Firstly, it was true for me that the more I suffered as a younger man with colds etc... the less I have had since around age 23/24. Infact I havent had a sniffle yet this year (touching wood). However as a teenager I had anything from 2-4 heavy colds per winter and I had the flu one year too which knocked me sideways for a fortnight!

How is your diet and lifestyle? Do you take additional vitamins or immune booster type products? What do you do for work? Do you get enough sleep? Do you wear suitbale clothing for the weather conditions? What are you doing to treat the symptoms, if anything?

All these factors can determine, to some degree, the likelyhood of becoming ill on a regular basis. Equally it could just be rotten look and you will grow out of it. Also dont rule out that this may not be 4 seperate colds but your body not totally getting over an initial heavy cold and you havent recovered yet.

It also depends on what you class as a cold. I know people who spend all winter "sniffly" but this isnt really a cold (yet they moan to be "full of cold" all the time). A cold is a fairly debilitating condition, aches and pains, shivers, coughs etc..... If you do indeed have cold symptoms and they have come and gone 4 times in 7 weeks then it may be that you need to see your GP who may suggest the flu jab or some lifestyle changes to prevent the onset of a cold. For the time being keep WARM and drink FLUIDS. Get plenty of rest and take paracetemol if the symptoms are bad. A pan or bowl of almost boiled water, few drops of olbas oil, wrap your head in a towel and stick it over the bowl. This always cleared me up a treat!!
Ah - it does - not as you write it, but once you've posted it :-)
