My 50ish year old cousin is staying with us for a few days.

She is sleeping a LOT. She went to bed at 11pm last night, slept right through till 11 am, got up and had breakfast; back to bed at 12.30 and up at 3.30.

She insists she doesn't feel ill, just has a real need for sleep. Apparently it has been going on for a few weeks.

She also cannot control her body temperature - she is too hot one minute and needs to go outside to cool down; later she is very cold and needs the heating on.

She has other vague, slight symptoms - dull headache at the top of her head; slight dizziness when she turns over in bed; tingling in hands.
Oh, and boils in her groin.

This is not connected to the menopause, by the way.

This is just so unlike her. Anyone have any suggestions?

Diabetes? Thyroid trouble? Anaemia ? - just a lay person commenting - where's Sqad?!
I really don't know but I would wonder at under-active thyroid. The boils in the groin seem odd though as if there was an umderlying infection. Has she not been concerned enough to go to GP?
would have suggested thyroid but if that has been ruled out. However is she sure they are boils and not enlarged glands. If so a trip to the doctor is in order..

Thanks for replies so far. She hasn't been to the GP because her symptoms are so vague and she embarrassed about telling him she is 'tired all the time'.

I will certainly encourage her to go. She says she has been like this for about a month and has had to cancel plans because of it.
Is she diabetic? tell her to get a blood test. Sounds like it to me.

Sqad will be on in the morning he'll give you a better idea.

The "guys" are correct.

Diabetes and an underactive thyroid need to be excluded.

Thanks all - she will definitely be going to the doctor's.
It could be underactive thyroid, it could be anaemia; it could just be a build up of lots of little stresses and complications. Could be a lot of things, in other words ;)

And "Tired all The Time" or TATT is, as Sqad will tell you, a very common symptom.
