Probably half as much time if you were the dumper than if you were the dumpee.

Ive got the tshirt if you haven't already guessed.
reckon ur right there Cockney always easier for the dumper than the dumpee - spesh when the dumper completely blanks u afterwards like they dont know u and u never figured in their life (not that im talking from experience at all - lol) that bloody ex has a lot to answer for lol
Awwww that's sad ... poor thing ... take it easy on yourself for a start and then a bit of distraction is always good. xxxx
When I was dumped I went on holiday and had a holiday romance...it was great for getting over him. Something to take my mind off it, someone else to think about and when I got home I realised that life is much more fun when you are single!!!
The important thing is don't let it be too long before you get on with your life but be gentle with yourself!
Do:-

Put all the lovey-dovey key fobs and trinkets in a drawer or cupboard somewhere.

Let all your friends know.
This is so they will tell their friends and
a) someone does not accidentally put their foot in it by asking so how are you and (insert girls name) getting on?
b) they may know of someone single who may be looking for a new relationship should all your current attempts at re-kindling the fire turn sour.

Take up a hobby/clean your room(s)

Start shaving again if you have stopped and keep your personal hygiene in tip top form.

Don't:-

leave a cardboard box of gifts they got you outside their house.

Radically change your appearance all of a sudden by bleaching your hair blonde.

Sleep with everyone in town just because you want to make them jealous.

Try to hit on their best mate.
In my experience it takes half the length of the relationship.

I have to disagree with cockney_si! I was the dumper and believe me I dont feel that Im having an easier time than my ex (so strange reffering to him as that after 6 years together!). I'm a female for one, so I have an emotional disadvantage! It been nearly 6 months for me and it still feels so fresh. I found it easier thinking of breakup as an oppurtunity - turning something negative into a positive.

Rebound snogs (only!) do wonders for your ego - a personal lift rather than doing it because you know it will get back to the other half.

Remeber smiles are for free!! xxxxx

I got over a 10 year relationship in 2 months... but perhaps I'm just heartless!!! I was the dumper though.

There is no set time. It'll get slightly better every day, but it varies from person to person. Give yourself a week to cry, scream, and break things, then follow cockney's advice above.

That's something that you won't know until it's happened. Just remember that at the end of every awful day you have, tell yourself that that particular day is over and you'll never have to live through it again, and tomorrow might be just as bad but then again it might not.

Really feel for you but you're going to be fine xxx

My Therapist tells me 2 years LoL.

My initial agony left in about 4 months, 5-8 months was much better, month 9 was **** (christmas) and 1 year was a big turning point.

But overall, the heart actually mends itself a little bit everyday, even if you can't feel it x x
