Are there any plants . roses etc that I can buy for a 70th birthday gift.

I don't know any plants that relate directly to a 70th birthday. There are roses with the names "Special anniversary" and "Congratulations"[both pink]
but they are rather non specific. There is a McCartney rose but that's a tenuous link to Paul McCartney who was born in 1942. Sorry, can't suggest anything other then a £70 garden gift voucher. Perhaps somebody else will have better suggestions.

if you have the time you could make up a book of everything that happened in the year 1942 ,I did the same thing for relatives celebrating a big birthday
there is all the information you need in google
I did things like Books published, Hit Parade, Films, Oscars,Nobel Prizes Famous people with same date of birth, Celebtities born in the same year, adverts for things invented in that year,
I printed little lists with pictures and embellished all the pages and then put the year on the front cover and a hand made by (me) on the back cover

You can have a plant/flower named after someone or rather they name it. My sister bought a lily for our mum for mother's day. You also get the seeds to grow said plant/flower. Like the link below...
