I've been at the dentists today to have impressions made, and measurements taken for new teeth -can anyone tell me what the blue gel is that they make the impressions with please, as ever since that appointment this morning I've felt really rough, and can' get rid of the smell of (something like) acetone out of my senses, and it's making me feel quite sick - I hope that it will go soon! I'd be interested to know what the substance is.

Yes, that type of thing, boxtops - I've just looked into other impression-taking putties, and one says that it is non toxic and odour free, which suggests to me that some putties do not have these qualities. Obviously I'm at a disadvantage as I do not know what brand the dentist has used. Oh well, I'll go and brush (what's left of) my teeth and go to bed and hope that by tomorrow this smell has gone!!
Teeth are a b----- nuisance from the day they come till the day they go.

Well I would agree whole-heartedly with you there, giveup, mine are nearly all gone now!
I've got a fair few on a plate and I hate it when you get a handsome young dentist and then have to take your plate out.
you could ask your dentist; or at least warn him next time that you react to it.
It was most likely a material called alginate, which is an irreversible hydrocolloid, rather than a silicone impression material. The smell is most likely form the fixative that is used to ensure the material sticks to the tray rather than the impression material itself.
Islasmum, Have you tried rinsing your mouth with a diluted TCP solution?
Or sucking a very strong cough/throat sweet?
Try and replace the nasty taste with one that isn't quite as bad.
