I think it depends how good a sofa bed it is. My mum has just started sleeping downstairs on her sofa (not bed). She says she wished she had done it years ago.
I have done - lived in a studio flat for a few years. It's not the most comfortable thing in the world and I'd recommend getting a good quality one if you do. That said, if you are doing nursing you should probably take better care of your back...

My brother always had a sofa bed but he could sleep anywhere I suppose. I couldn't give up my bed though...
I used to sleep on my recliner chair, I did it for a couple of years until I got my adjustable bed. It was very confortable.
*comfortable*
We had a good quality one when we had a flat and used it for guests. It was a metal framed one with a slatted base. it was very comfortable especially for one person, but if it were a reasonably permanent solution I could not see myself putting it away! You'd have to fold up all the bedding to put the bed away and make the bed again each night. If you don't end up bothering to do that you save no space........

Some are damn hard and lumpy!

You just want it for sleeping on? .. or anything else? : )
could never sleep on one every night, no matter how good it was, love my bed, but we have one, and visitors always say that it's really comfy!.....it wasn't cheap though!..........I guess you get what you pay for!.......
I can recommend this: http://www.johnlewis....31390599/Product.aspx
mine is in leather (no longer available) but the memory foam enables everyday use. It is also really comfortable.
Is memory foam not a bit "sweaty"?
Temrec, I have a memory foam mattress, it's soooooooo comfy!......some folk say that they are too hot, but I find it fine!..............
Avoid ones that look like buttoned caravan upholstery .. they are hard and horrible.
Check for noisy steel frames inside ..

I like the Ikea type with a hidden pull-out lower mattress.

Welshy, I nearly bought a memory foam mattress, but when the salesman said how hot I would be (and bearing in mind I was on the verge of hot flushes), I decided against it!
Not sweaty at all, it's on a wooden slatted base and unlike a bed, if you look at the link you will see that the base has plenty of air circulation underneath. I have slept on it for up to two weeks at a time, I am happy to give up my bed for guests, and I don't suffer from back ache etc. after sleeping on it.
tenrec, I am already there as far as the flushes go, but still love my memory foam mattress, I am so comfy, and when I wake I feel refreshed, whereas before, due to a spinal problem, I was stiff and sore!.........
Welshy - :)
We had a really good quality one it had a wooden sprung base and a full size proper sprung mattress (about 6 inch deep) it was really comfy but the sofa cost about £700 in a sale about 15 years ago so not very cheap. Sofa fabric got really tatty and looked into getting it recovered as the bed was in excellent condition but in the end it was too big for the room it was in so ended up getting rid of it.. It was designed for everyday use. I think they categorise them I think into Everyday, Frequent or Occasional use
