i loooooooooorrrrve it! Just found a huge pot with today's date at back of fridge and don't really want to give it the chickens tomorrow :(

Crisgal, of course you can eat it, I eat stuff like that that is a good two weeks' out of date, it's so wasteful otherwise. Unless it's got furry things growing on it, I'll eat it. My yogurts in the fridge are dated July, they are still perfectly OK.
I agree with boxy. You have to let common sense be the judge...not some date.
You need to be more careful with some foods-ie-fish and chicken. But with most foods there is loads of leeway.
Look at it like this.....if meat was starting to develop a less than pleasant smell and colour-would you still use it because the date said it was OK? No-you'd trust your senses. It's what our parents and grandparents did.
