Can depression be cured? Are there any medicines that I can buy to cure myself of depression? I have a lousy feeling every day. it doesn't make me sad. I just feel lousy. Is it depression? Can exercise help to get rid of this sort of feeling?

Thanks.

Tanelaine, depression can be 'cured'. Not sure if there's anything on the Market you can buy but certainly if you went to the doctors they would be able to prescribe somewhat. Exercise can help, as it releases endorphins (sp?) and I'm sure something else to which is a natural feel good chemical in the body. Maybe give this a go and see how it pans out and if you still feel the same make an appointment with the doc. Good luck xx
see the GP first, talk it over with him/her and go from there. And as to a cure for depression then would say no, but that doesn't mean to say that you can't get it under control. Exercise is a way to increase fitness for the body, and that will in turn make you feel better about yourself, but its what's in your head that needs the attention first. I do know, and take care.
try....st johns wort....herbal
Mickrog St John's wort doesn't suit everyone, and would say start off with the GP, because whatever type of depression, there is an underlying cause, sometimes medical.
i agree ..but at least it is not a drug which to me makes it more acceptable
i agree with em it is best if you have a chat with your doctor
St John's Wort Mood Relief

A traditional herbal medicinal product used to relieve the symptoms of slightly low mood and anxiety, based on traditional use.

St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a common plant indigenous to Europe that can often be found growing in meadows. The bright yellow petals of the plant are dotted with small red spots which are in fact glands containing hypericin, a substance believed to be responsible for the beneficial actions of St. John’s Wort.

St John's Wort has been used for centuries as a natural herbal supplement and is widely used throughout Europe. The active ingredient hypericin, is believed to help increase levels of the brain chemical messenger serotonin.

Each Healthspan tablet contains 370mg of extract equivalent to 1,850mg-2,590mg of St John’s Wort.
Doc won't necessarily advise medication, but there could be an underlying reason, that might make you feel low, they should take blood pressure, and blood tests if felt necessary, to rule out say thyroid, or other problems that can affect mood.
Yes. Yes. Could be. Yes

HERBAL MEDICINES ARE DRUGS many of todays most powerful medicine comes from plants.....you wouldn't expect someone to self medicate with digitalis or deadly nightshade.or vinca (Vincristine is a chemotherapy drug).. Even if you understand a little about using herbs you should not believe all the claims you read on manufacturers packaging as they are only governed by foodstuffs regulations rather than pharmacological ones. there does seem to be some evidence that St John's wort can help some people but depression is a serious condition that needs taking seriously

Actually there is more evidence that foods high in the naturally occurring chemical tryptophan are helpful and Em10 is right exercise is is part of the treatment picture. it may not even need drugs sometimes counselling is as effective and helps address underlying causes if it is reactive depression.
there are also medical conditions that can make you feel 'depressed' thyroid problems and some kidney problems can make you feel lifeless and 'slow'
GP first and if they think its only mild then maybe the self help stuff.
It depends if you do indeed have Depressionl which is a specific mental condition, or if you are feeling low because of circumstances, or a separate underlying health issue.

You need to see your GP who wil be able to assess you properly, and medicate you if needed.
Depression must first be diagnosed and there are many forms of Depression each one having a specific line of treatment.

Get a diagnosis first......preferably form a specialist.
I have a friend who takes tablets for Epilepsy and her doctor told her she could never touch St Johns Wort as they would interfere with the Epilepsy medication. So do see your doctor
try 5-HTP....hydroxytryptophan
St John's wort also interfers with other medictions such as the contraceptive pill so please go and see your doctor before self medicating with something herbal
You should also steer clear of St John's Wort if you have any blood clotting disorders.
As life long sufferer Ithink it's something you have to put up with. Howevever they say that cognitive therapy on top of sort tem tranqs can be very helpful.
I try and do at least one thing a day that Ilike.
Also, without stating the obvious look at your own environment for answers, job family relationships etc some we can change and some we can't
tainelaine, yes depression can be improved and cured, but not with over the counter medication, you need to talk to your GP, he/she will listen to your symptoms, and prescribe the best medication to help you!.....
tanelaine - there is not a quick fix pill for curing depression. If you think you suffering from it, I would see your GP frst and discuss you symptoms with them
