I used to work with a chap who said he never watched or read the news , because it was depressing and he was not interested in most of it.

I was thinking , what would life be like in a news / current events free bubble ?

Would not know anything about the Hacking going on's - Missed the feeling of disgust ...rage at police taking money - people being laid off at News Of World (innocent ones).
Euro crisis - Worry of how it will effect way of life - job - money etc
The murder of patients in hospital - Disgust ... Nurse all over press ...seems she has been found guilty by press already ...

Just spend my days thinking about shiny things and in the apple store

Would life be less full ?

I have a friend like that Sir and quite frankly I think she misses out on a lot, she can't discuss in a group about things in the News, her choice I know but I like keeping up with current issues
my parents don't watch the news or read papers either
My son had a teacher like that - I used to help in her class. When 9/11 happened she had no idea - she must have walked around with her eyes closed & ear plugs in to have missed that!
I very rarely watch the news unless its on and i look up or if theres something happening and i want to follow it.... i cant remember the last time i read a newspaper except for a local one....... i cant see as it matters if people cant discuss things about the news in a group like bobbi mentioned....
thinking about it i didnt know diana had died until about 3 weeks after it happened... i chose that one as im sure most people in the world knew about it
I didn't say it mattered but if this person is sitting with a group of people she feels 'left out' and so we are courteous enough not to allow the conversation to proceed
I must admit that the only people I discuss the news with are Mr LL and here on AB. I do watch the fnews at least once a day on BBC normally at 10pm and hear snippets of it on the radio throughout the day.

I don't discuss it if I am out on social occasions!!

But then our Bobbi mixes in elite circles!!!!

Some of the happiest people are those people that don't keep in touch with the news at all and lead very insular lives - hardly travelling outside their home territory. Lots of older (and younger people too surprisingly) live in rural villages with virtually no bus services in Norfolk and probably have never been to Norwich let alone anywhere else. They probably are very very happy indeed.

Talking of news, When do you think the miners' strike might end and we will see the end of these bloomin' power cuts and the three day working week?
<splutter>
elite circles...ha-ha LL

Humm ... I wonder If I could do it for a whole month as an experiment ?
But then again I will crack and want to know the outcome of things ...like the Nurse being charged or let go ....the Euro issue (Greece etc) ....

Suppose it will be like when I gave up drinking ....missed it to start with , but after a few months forgot what so great about having a few pints.
Don't miss drinking one bit now.
I was not a heavy drinker anyway, just a few pints a month ...then go a months without having a drink. It was mainly due to boredom while away. But don't miss it one bit now.
Not quite the same but many years ago I used to work with what were once called ESN people (dunno what the current PC term is, probably educationally disadvantaged or something like that).

Thing is I envied them and their simplistic view on things. Nothing fazed them, they were always happy. Nice to be content with what you have and know rather than let worries and thinking get in the way.
in this country at this time we have the fredom to be complacent.

god forbid something happened in the world/news that impacted on their happy twee lives.
I often miss the news and by the time I catch up with a big story its either all over or dragging on and on. I find this light dusting of snippets just enough to keep me in touch; any more and I feel over loaded by the sensationalism applied to it all.

Yes maybe I do live in a bubble, but its quite a peaceful one.

Having said that, I did watch the Chilean miners being brought out of the mine into the early hours of the morning and recorded the last couple of hours which I watched when I got up the next day.

Maybe it's best to only about things when they are about to hurt you , rsther than worry about things that might and then don't.

Yes a lot of young people in my family (18 to 21) don't register what is happening most of the time. They don't seem the worse for it.
They would cope Ankou. They would do what comes naturally without all the initial worrying about it and without particularly worrying about what would happen afterwards.

Being knowledgeable doesn't bring happiness, it just gives you more to worry about!!

The news is the mass sharing of emotions ....

Chilean miners ....share the anguish and relief
Hospital murders .... Worry and disgust
Euro crisis .... Worry of what might happen to our economy and thus our won well being

No news = No shared emotions ....
Question Author
LL that's so right ...the more you understand the more you worry
Perhaps you could persuade these 'news-dodgers' to hand in their voting cards in at Reception before an Election?
that's it!
I am watching no more :-)))
oh gas billls have gone up, i can't afford it - yes it was on the news british gas up 16%

oh post office has shut down, i need to cash my giro - yes, royal mail announced all closures last month on news at 10

oh my local bank has just closed down, i need money - yes, the times said that that bank has been sold to santander and branches will close

oh there are alot of germans in the village all of a sudden - yes, in the news for the last 3 momhts, the german army has been advancing towards the uk in tanks and infantry. ver ar your paperz
Well what would they have done differently if they had known about any of those events previously Ankou. Probably just sat and worried about it, because people that don't worry about things don't usually plan either. ;o)
