I have known a chap since he was 17 (he is now mid forties). He was OK ish in his teens but seemed to have a few problems with coordination. Over the years his eyesight has deteriorated and his physical coordination has got worse and worse and his voice has become extremely high pitched and slow. I have now come across someone else with similar problems. Is this some sort of recognised syndrome?

I met the first chap yesterday and he has deteriorated rapidly since I last spoke to him a few months ago.

Could be lots of things, including MS
Do you imagine he might have done quite a lot of drugs ?
Or it might be a very easily treated thyroid condition,.
Best leave it to the experts. best you could do for him is to find out - if he is not seeing a doctor, get him to see one
Don't want to be a scare monger but I have had similar symptons, and have gone downhill from 2009. Still reasonably OK but I suffer from poor coordination, balance problems, extreme fatigue.

To cut a long story short my doctor sent me for an MRI scan, and a growth in my brain was discovered which they suspect is causing these problems. Had I not bugged my doctor I'd have never have known.
My only qualification is in Hypochondria but the symptoms could be so many conditions.

This is the one that I thought of first - http://en.wikipedia.o...Friedreich%27s_ataxia

I hope that gentleman in question has gone to see his doctor - but being male it is possible that he hasn't.
Lofty........there are many neurological syndromes that would fit into that picture and I agree with the posters in that he needs to see a Neurologist.

Sqad and others. This person is not a close friend or anything, just someone I have known since he was a kid. I am sure he and his family have seen all the right people and know what is wrong. I was just being curious about the high voiced thing as someone else I see from time to time also has it.

I have known quite a few friends with MS and other neurological illnesses, but none of them have developed voice problems. They have speech problems but not this high pitched very squeaky voice.

Thanks for your answers.

I should point out that this deterioration has been over 30+ years, not recent. It was purely out of curiousity that I wanted to know if the voice problem pointed to anything in particular.
Lofty....MS.....they have a slow "scanning " speech....not high pitched, a high pitched squeeky voice would suggest vocal cord cord involvement.

I will give it further thought.

Thank you Sqad. I became more curious when I came across a chap with a similar problem who is employed locally. (On a scheme to employ disabled workers)

Whatever it is the eyesight must be affected, or there must be an aversion to sunlight. Both wear very dark glasses like goggles that stop any light getting into their eyes.

And I would say that there has always been a degree of a learning difficulty problem in both cases, but mild.
No....I have given it further thought and cannot come up with any further thoughts. There are many chromosomal deficiency syndromes, but I will "butt out" at this juncture.....outside my expertise ;-)

Not my place to really be thinking about it is it Sqad. Thanks though. x
