I've been having the depo injections for about 5 years now, with no breaks. I'm due to have my next dose on Thursday however I am no longer with my boyfriend and therefore do not really have a need for any sort of contraception. I wondered from people in the know about these things, would it be wise to cancel the injection and give my body a break or is it a better idea to keep going with it?

it depends really. Are you likely to get back with him? Likely to start seeing someone else? can you cope with periods again?
I agree with evil.

You never know, a chance encounter ;-)

Go on, have your injection.
I would continue with it millie - especially if you are not having any problems. And, you never know........ ;-)
i remember asking my doc years ago should I come off the pill for a while to give my body a break and he said no need if not having any problems with it.
why do I have a feeling that DP was considered 'not good' many years ago? am sure there was a hassle about it.
hi i was on depo and in the leaflets i recieved with it it says you should have a break after 2yrs because of bone density or something... i have just found out im pregnant after being off it 3yrs.. so if you want kids in near future i would suggest a different contraceptive
I remember years ago being advised to come off it for a while to give my body a break - this was back around 2000 though so guessing things might have moved on a bit by then :) If it works for you then if the professionals are happy to give you the injection then why not.

I agree with honey about the time it can take to get your body back to normal, it took me a good 18 months to get periods again after I came off it the last time.
One danger with carrying on is the temptation to have unprotected sex with the next partner....then catch something. If you don't trust your doctor with this why not find your local clinic and ask them?

Thanks for the answers. I never see the doctor, it's always done by the nurse at the surgery. It's just been playing on my slightly over emotional mind over the past few days but having read the answers, I think I'll probably have this injection and then I have another 12 weeks to think it over a little more.
If you are over emotional at the moment then a change in hormones might not be the best idea right now. Hope you're ok hon x
