My friend in america is having a really tough time living with her mother.  She is clinically depressed and on medication for it.  My mother is emotionally abusive.  I know that if she was in england she would qualify to go quite high up on the list for council housing, but I don't know about america.  Is there an american equivalent, and what would be the name of the department?

I'm not sure but wouldn't the department of family services be able to help, equivalent to our social work department, people seem to think they are just there for people with kids.  I hope your friend gets sorted out ok
