To those of you who answered my question about my lump on my leg over the weekend, it seems I should have been a little more concerned than I was. It gradually got worse over the weekend and I woke up this morning to what appeared to be a burst abcess. Went to the docs this morning and she has given me anti-biotics, although she is doubtful they will work. Have to see her again on Thursday and if its no better (or gets worse by then) I have to go to hospital for a nights to get some intrevenous anti-b and get the infection drained. So now I'm sitting at home in agony feeling very sorry for myself.

Sorry B00. The title should have been warning enough though. :o)
Ouch! I had an infected abcess late last year for weeks. It wouldn't respond to antibiotics and I ended up in A&E being stuck on a drip and having it "sorted" by the nice surgeons in the emergency surgery ward - OMG, such a relief when they did it.

From my experience, having left the hospital being told to get in touch with my GP as I needed the would packed (I'd stay blissfully ignorant, doesn't hurt so much, more just gross) and dressed at least every other day until it healed enough.

I then found my GP practice "doesn't do wound care" so had to try and find another clinic who did and could fit me in at very short notice, given it had to be redressed the next day, who then told me I should have been given a prescription for surgical packing and dressings (you don't get the packing over the counter in Boots!) as they don't just provide them but did as a "one off". I was then told I had to go up every day for it to be checked and redressed for about 5 days.

I ended up having to speak to the hospital who were great and arranged for me to see the nurses at the hospital walk in clinic every day after work for it to be sorted.

Thought I'd warn you so you know what to ask, just in case you end up with a similar faff.

Oh and I can speak from experience that after having the procedure late evening under the local I opted for (general meant days in), going into work for 8am the next morning was really not such a good idea!

Feel better soon, abcesses are evil x

Hi Jenna,

Believe it or not I have had experience of having an infected abscess before and went through the torture of having it excised under a general and packed daily on 5 different occasions until they eventually carried out a different operation to fix it, alhough that started from a completely different thing so I am desperately hoping this doesn't get to that stage. I remember how awful it was and that took up several years of my life.

Hopefully these anti-b's will kick in soon and it won't be anywhere near like it was the last time.
Ahh :) (well, not so smiley)

Hope it sorts for you on the antibiotics, what have they got you on? Co-amoxiclav and metronidazole (sp) cocktail? Where on your leg is it? Can you raise it (helped me when I had cellulitis on my foot which wouldn't shift - they had me raise it above my head for 48 hours)? I couldn't for my abcess though as was right at the top of one of my legs - soooo painful!

Fingers crossed the antibiotics do their thing!
Well, honestly - why didn't you take our advice right away and then you might have been feeling a bit better by now. I shall have to put you on the naughty step. Hope that now you have got some treatment it will soon be better, but please let us know.

Just flucloxacillin Jenna. Back in the morning to see what they want to do with me but it's not as painful today so I'm taking that as a good sign.

I know Starbuck. I feel very silly. It just wasn't as bad as it turned out yesterday morning so I didn't want to waste anyones time.

Well, I've neen to see the doc who tried to drain it herself and decided it was a pointless excercise so I'm off to hospital this afternoon to see if they can sort it out. Yuk.
