I've been taking Liraglutide for my diabetes for a month now, and am getting on quite well, apart from one embarrassing side effect - it makes me burp a lot and I'm bringing up really bad, smelly breath - ( it's definitely related to this medicine, as I haven't had bad breath before) I spoke to the diabetic nurse I saw recently, and she thinks that it will gradually settle down and go away, but I wondered if anyone out there knew of any food that might neutralize this a bit? Thanks for any help.

Have a word with your local pharmacist and ask whether an 'over the counter' antispasmodic drug might be beneficial. (The pharmacist will know at least as much as your doctor does about whether you can safely take such drugs alongside Liraglutide). If so, you'll probably be offered either Asmebeverine (under the brand name 'Colofac') or Alverine ('Spasmonal').

Alternatively ask your GP the same question. (In terms of prescription charges, that most be the most economic route to go down).

Some people suggest that liquorice can be useful in controlling excess intestinal gas but, given its laxative qualities, it should be used with care!

The way that peppermint works seems to be disputed. Some claim that it's simply an antacid (which probably wouldn't help deal with your problem) but others state that it actually relaxes the gut muscles (which might help you). Worth a try, perhaps?

Thanks Chris, I'll definitely have a word with the pharmacist, and also think about peppermint - good advice - as usual! Thanks.

im on it too, (victoza)

dont worry those awful burps will soon pass,
mind you, you say youve been on it for a month? i found mine went after about 2weeks ish.
heres a link to a thread on a diabetes site which i found very very interesting and helpful.

if you have a scan through, you will find lots of peoples posts asking about that particular side effect when on the injection, plus loads of other helpful related things too..

let me know how youre getting on with the medication :o)

hows your appetite, blood sugars and weight doing, since being on it?

It is a side effect of Liraglutide and is quite a common occurrence.

Nothing that you can take will ease it.

loobyloo is correct, it will soon pass.

If you decide to go down the route of trying something to stop it, then make sure that whatever you take does not interact with the Liraglutide.
