Depends upon the reason for the surgery as if it is to remove a loose body or piece of bone, then you will be on crutches for perhaps 4 to 4 days, but you should be returning to "normal" function after about 2-3 weeks.

Returning to sport is more difficult to prognosticate.
"4 to 5days"
Just had keyhole surgery on my hip, I'm out for 3 weeks (crutches), signed off for 4 weeks and not back to the gym on certain things for 5 weeks. Depends on the surgery though.
Oh... And I'm office based and a non driver.
I had an arthroscopy on my ankle in Feb last year. I asked for a ankle block so I could at least walk out of the hospital into a car. It was 2 weeks before I could really go back to work, and they told me 2 weeks was about normal. I actually had 3 weeks off cos it was over half term and was able to walk okay enough to work. Having said that, I don't drive so I'm not sure- you'd need to be able to perform an emergency stop! In the first week you are taking codeine so can't drive. I would allow 3 weeks but maybe try and get a lift/car share to work after 2?

It's more for diagnostic reasons because i twisted my ankle quite badly & broke my leg at the same time. My ankle has been painful since & weak. They don't really know what needs doing till they start the operation.
Same as any arthroscopy then- even if they just go in and have a look, it will be sore and stiff for 2 weeks and need exercising etc to get back to normal.
