Micro-discectomy............personal experience, anyone ?

I am shortly to undergo a micro-discectomy on L5/S1 prolapsed disc.
I have no real qualms about the surgery itself, nor the prognosis for 'long-term' recovery.
However, I would be interested to hear from anyone who has experienced this operation themselves or who has close contact with someone who has.
What were the short-term implications; pain, mobility, etc. ?
Is there a time-frame of improvements I can reasonably expect ?
Any do's or don't's ?

Thanks.

Ahem... Good luck with the op Jack! (I'll go back to CB and be 'helpful' there instead now...)
