How long till a prescription from the dr expires?

I went to the dr a while ago with a ear infection I was going to get the prescription from the chemist and it was not in my bag. I thought it must have come out when I went shopping. I did not get a chance to book another appointment with the dr but the infection seemed to clear up. It is now back and I have found the prescription in the car it is more than a month old now, can I still take it to the chemist or is it too late now?
