Does anyone else think ADHD has only come about since smacking was outlawed and discipline has lapsed?

How come we never seemed to have ADHD when I was a child 30 odd yeas ago, or is this because it was undiagnosed at the time? I don't recall the kind of disruption back then, that we have now.

so how many children with ADHD have you been in contact with velvet, and in what capacity?

I've come across lots of badly behaved and hyperactive children, no idea if their behaviour is as a result of ADHD. I just cannot ever recall there being children throughout my schooldays, who were disruptive or lacked attention.

It seems to be common place now, so many people I've encountered who's children are diagnosed with it.
medical knowledge has improved recently which accounts for more diagnosis, granted some children are the product of bad (normally lazy) parenting.

ADHD does exist, if diet is controlled symptoms can be less severe, but it does exist.

So perhaps this is more widespread over the years, due to more additives and chemicals being added to foods.

I personally think alot of difficult children are the way they are, because their parent/parents do not know how to deal with situations and respond to the child in the correct way.
also society has changed in the sense that more and more parents are too busy to spare time with their children, 20 or 30 years ago there were less divorce and less hectic lifestyles. Its an unfortunate cycle of parents having to work long hours to pay the mortgage ect..

With kids being farmed out to breakfast clubs/after school clubs/weekend clubs it is not a surprise that they require more assurance and exhibit attention seeking behaviour

ADHD children have a specific problem that is there whether they are well cared for or not.
IMHO ADHD is a myth of sorts. It's a reaction to the bloody chemicals that are pumped into kids nowadays.

Once i removed all colouring and food additives from my son's diets there was a remarkable change.

No fizzy pop, no brightly coloured sweets etc. If my eldest had coke he was a little bar steward. I'm sure that it's all down to the big chemical companies.

Give the kids this chemical so they become a pain then convince the parents they have a disease we've made up then we can sell them another drug as a cure.

You are probably right dabees.
ADHD is a brain disorder. Brain disorders have always existed in this form, mild and severe.

Perhaps it just the 'label' that you, I, and many others are not too keen on. But this was adopted to alleviate the social/personal impact of psychologists saying 'your child has minimal brain damage'.

More parents would concede that telling people their child has ADHD is infinitely preferable to them saying they have minor brain dysfunction, although invariably they are the same thing.
Hmmm, ADHD has always been there, it just wasnt as well known as it is now. Science and technology has progressed so much over the years.
Its like white dog poo, it was a norm at one stage, but now its gone, it would be a big thing if you ever saw it.
The same with chewing gum at school. I always got told it was really bad for you, but now dentists recommend it.
The same could be said for SAD (seasonal affective disorder) there was no such thing until some woman claimed the weather was making her ill...
my son has adhd its not just a myth .....
and i dont let him eat or drink rubbish
Most kids that are labelled as having ADHD are either mainly spoiled kids or kids who want their own ways and the parents don't know how to control them. Most children don't have any kind of "attention deficit" that can be helped with dangerous drugs that could not be better served by having parents give more of their time to them. And I mean real time, not just farming them out to more and more private lessons or sports camps.

The medication that's given to kids to combat this 'thing' creates more problems for children minds and increase pharmaceuticals profits. It's all a conspiracy between pharmaceutical companies and leeching doctors. Parents need to wake up and not leave the care of their child/children up to drug companies. There are far more in the direct interest of drug companies and the appointment books of doctors. Parents have allowed themselves - especially their children as young as one years old - to become dependant on medication.
figure you know nothing !!!! i have 2 boys both been treated the same one has adhd one dont .and he has never been a problem ...if it was due to us parents how comes they both dont have it ????

We got good old fashioned West Indian parenting, we knew where the boundaries were and did not cross it. My parent swouldn't have tolerated any rubbish, so there was no point playing up. Those days are long gone now.
100% in agreement with you Velvetee. And you and I may have something in common. ;-)
Sleeps, everyone is entitled to their opinions. There's nothing than can convince me otherwise on my beliefs on this subject.
In the police force it's known as NLBS or 'naught little ******* syndrome'.

Seems to be prevalent in council estates and is the sole reserve of scumbag families.

Really Figure, did your folks put licks on you too? Lol
"mainly spoiled kids or kids who want their own ways and the parents don't know how to control them "
Hmmm I have two great nephews who are diagonosed with this .They are not spoilt ,have normal siblings and their mothers are stay at home Mums with stable family relationships and they certainly know how to look after their own children
.They don't eat junk food .All chemical reactive stuff was ruled out .It's a brain disorder simple as that .
Many years ago there was a chap in my town we used to call "Silly Willy ".He was very bright but totally daft.
You may well laugh but looking back he displayed the same symptoms as these children today .But of course in those days people dismissed him as being "Simple ".
It is a recognised medical condition much as stuff like Yuppie Flu(ME) and OCD .
But of course if an adult has something like OCD nobody pooh poohs it do they ?
Do you have any children Velvetee?
